Job purpose:
The Project Manager, Resilience will be responsible for managing and delivering all aspects of BBC Media Action’s Radio for Resilience project. The project aims to strengthen the ability of community radio, civil society organisations (CSOs) and local government to contribute to increase accountability and support ordinary Tanzanians to build their resilience to climate change. Key activities include mentoring and training of community radio stations to produce high quality content on climate related issues and supporting and enabling relationship building between radio stations, CSOs and local government.
Reporting to the Senior Projects Manager, the post holder will be responsible for the overall delivery of the project; in particular ensuring the project meets its objectives, constantly strives to learn, monitor and improve based on impact data and is delivered on time, within budget and to the highest possible standards.
Main duties
To deliver the Radio for Resilience project on time, to budget and to the highest standards in terms of quality, effectiveness, impact and relevance, meeting objectives clearly defined in the project proposal. Specifically:
Responsible for all aspects of the project management cycle; including:
- Planning project activities in line with project objectives and management of activity implementation
- Overall management of the project budget, including timely budget reforecasting and constant monitoring. This includes tracking monthly expenditure against targets and accurately forecasting and delivering against agreed budgets
- Developing and managing external relationships with project partners, including the wider BBC, local broadcasters, NGOS and the project donor
- Writing monthly internal project progress reports and regular external donor reports
- Line management of the project assistant and two project journalist trainer/mentors
- Work closely with BBC Media Action’s research team to support and oversee the design and evaluation of project research activities. Ensuring research tools to monitor and evaluate programme output and audience feedback as well as data analysis are in line with the project objectives
- Liaise with BBC Media Action’s production team to ensure the journalist trainer/mentors receive necessary support, in turn strengthening the support they can give to the radio station partners to produce an air content that is high quality and meets editorial standards
- Liaise regularly with the Africa Project Manager based in London to ensure the project adheres to all legal and contractual requirements
- Support the Senior Project Manager with business development for resilience projects, including liaising with potential donors and supporting with proposal and budget development
Required skills, knowledge and experience:
- At least 3 years’ experience in international development, with demonstrable experience in project planning and management systems
- Experience managing the project budget cycle – from conception, through budget building, to implementation, monitoring, reviewing and reporting/accounting
- Experience in line management of staff
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Strong commitment to, and understanding of, development issues in Tanzania
- Experience writing project briefs, reports, terms of reference and other project documents
- Fluency in English and Swahili and ability to write reports in those languages
Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:
- Experience in building resilience to the effects of climate change and/or agriculture and livelihoods a distinct advantage
- Experience in radio and/or television production either from a media or a communications background. Applicants with extremely sound ideas, but little production experience will be considered on evidence of creativity and potential
- Experience of project fundraising, including networking with donors and drafting project proposals
- Ability to make sound judgments on editorially sensitive programme issues
