JOB SUMMARY
Wellspring Advisors seeks a Program Officer to support and provide critical oversight to its programming in Uganda, which focuses on pro-poor economic development, children’s rights and education, women’s rights, and human rights. This is a full time position based in Kampala, but will involve travel throughout Uganda.
We provide competitive compensation and benefits package to local staff, which includes paid time off and stipends for health insurance and retirement.
Please note: This is a local-hire position. No expatriate benefits are available. Wellspring Advisors will not sponsor any candidates to relocate to Uganda and/or obtain any necessary legal documentation in Uganda, such as visas or work permits. Similarly, Wellspring will not sponsor candidates to move to or work in the United States.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct due diligence and site visits for current and prospective grantee organizations; monitor activities and use of funds by current grantees; evaluate grantee performance;
• Provide critical feedback on grantmaking decisions and recommendations;
• Research and make recommendations about issue areas of interest to Wellspring’s programs; report findings and recommendations through regular updates and meetings;
• Provide updates on unfolding current events that may have an impact on its partners or program focus;
• Support grantees, applicants, and staff to ensure completion and submission of applications and reports;
• Communicate grant information and grant recommendations to applicants and grantees;
• Engage and network with donors and NGOs working in relevant fields in Uganda; attend relevant forums, meetings and conferences;
• Provide support in the planning and coordination of grant-related activities, including technical assistance provision, trainings and convenings;
• Support Wellspring team in planning and executing site visits to local partners in Uganda; and
• Perform related duties as requested and as needs evolve.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS
• 7+ years professional experience working in the fields of international development and/or human rights in Uganda;
• University degree required; graduate degree preferred;
• Strategic planning and organizational development experience highly preferred;
• Ability to work across a range of programmatic issue areas; specific experience in the areas of human rights, economic development, women’s rights, reproductive health, and/or children’s rights highly preferred;
• Excellent English oral and written communications skills and analytic abilities required, knowledge of local languages a plus;
• Prior experience with grantmaking or grants management a plus;
• Initiative, resourcefulness, and flexibility—ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
• Demonstrated commitment to Wellspring’s grantmaking priorities;
• Ability to travel within Uganda and to the U.S.; and
• Ability to handle confidential client information with complete discretion.
