Rio Tinto has recently acquired control of Riversdale Mining in Mozambique to create Rio Tinto Coal Mozambique (RTCM). RTCM currently has several projects in study phase as well as the Benga mine site, which officially opened their operations in May 2012.
We have an excellent career opportunity for a Manager Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) to join the Benga Operations team in Mozambique. You will lead and manage the Coal Preparation function to ensure coal quality and control from site via ROM and conveyor transportation, coal crushing and stockpiling, linking in with other departments to include train conveying through to ship.
As this is a Greenfield operation, your role will be more challenging and complex than at an established mine site. You will be accountable for CHPP business improvement process definition and project governance, budgets and reporting, system and procedure definition and other technical advice to ensure RTCM operates in a highly competitive, aligned, safe and environmentally responsible manner that maximises the value of the resource.
The key responsibilities of this role are:
- Implement and promote a pro-active safety culture within the CHPP team and support the RTCM safety culture.
- Ensure that all work undertaken by CHPP personnel is performed with safety being of prime importance
- Timeliness and quality of Incident Reporting and Management
- Identification of and participation in safety initiatives, use and quality of JHAs
- Guide the CHPP team to achieve production targets in a cost effective manner
- Manage and provide engineering control of the processing risks that would jeopardise the safety and economic viability of the RTCM plan
- Be actively involved in understanding the strategic direction of RTCM and contribute to ensuring that the mine is resourced appropriately to achieve mine targets
- Proactively liaise with the RTCM Marketing, Commercial and Technical teams to ensure that Business Plans are consistent with the latest RTCM plans
- Investigate technology improvements and provide strategic direction to the coal processing department as to how and when new technologies can be used.
- Direct the development and management of your department budget and be actively involved in the development of site budgets
- Instigate programs and provide technical support to achieve cost reductions in the plant and coal delivery systems through innovative technologies and systems
- Provide timely and accurate advice and leadership in areas of business performance, technical systems, improvement opportunities, benchmarking and fault analysis.
- Accountable for leadership of the CHPP department in order to achieve productive outcomes and continue to do so over time
- Conduct WPRs and provide appropriate feedback, coaching and training to team members to maintain and improve performance
- Ensure that the skills of your team are developed over time with the appropriate training
- Complete specific projects to meet agreed quantity, quality and time standards with the agreed resources (QQRT)
- Implement and maintain appropriate systems both computer and non-computer based to facilitate the active management of the department leading to a high level of coal processing performance
- Implement systems that measure performance and provide accurate supporting data for effective decision making
- Identify opportunities for business improvement by using accurate supporting data
- Implement and use Business Improvement tools such as Lean/Six Sigma in line with the sites strategy.
- Manage all contractors and contracts related to coal processing and maintenance according to RTCM standards
The skills and experience you should ideally bring to this role are:
- Tertiary qualifications, ideally in mining or engineering
- Extensive experience in mining and process engineering
- CHPP management experience in a large scale mining operation
- Sound knowledge of relevant mining legislation and industry practice.
- Numerical analysis and data validation skills, including statistical and predictive techniques.
- Involvement with equipment monitoring systems.
- Experience in quality control systems.
- Experience within environmentally focused mining operations.
- Extensive experience in leading and managing teams, ideally in a culturally diverse environment
- Exposure to mining technology to identify opportunities for use
- Experience in managing projects from inception to completion
- Strong interpersonal and leadership ability
- Hands on process plant management experience and ideally operations experience in a variety of product groups.
- Communication, influencing and interpersonal skills to work effectively with all people that the position interacts
- With the ability to analyse data, draw conclusions and present recommendations for improvement
