PROJECT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
With a population of around 50 million and an electricity access rate of around 30 percent, Tanzania has a sizeable number of people without access to grid electricity. The people living in off-grid areas rely on expensive, inefficient and dangerous fuels like kerosene to meet their lighting needs. While the government is pursuing an ambitious grid roll out campaign, off-grid solar lighting and energy products, ranging from basic solar lanterns to more sophisticated solar home systems, can make an important contribution in providing energy access.
The Lighting Africa - Tanzania program ("program") is implemented by lEO and in collaboration with the World Bank as part of the broader joint Lighting Global initiative. The program aims to enable rural population segments across Tanzania to gain access to quality assured off-grid solar lighting and energy products by supporting the development and growth of the market. The program works with solar product manufacturers, distributors, government agencies, finance institutions and other stakeholders to address a range of market barriers including: financial bottlenecks, regulatory constraints, market spoilage from poor quality products and low consumer awareness levels.
The Lighting Africa - Tanzania program seeks to engage a consultant to support the market
