For more than 50 years,the African Wildlife Foundation(AWF) has been a key player in African Conservation and sustainable development. AWF is currently seeking a talented professional to support its Community Development Initiatives for its Kilimanjaro Heartland program.
Key Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for the implementation of AWF’s forest conservation program around Kitumbeine & Gelai Forest within Lake Natron Wildlife Management Area. The incumbent in collaboration with Kilimanjaro Heartland team will facilitate the implementation, management and documentation aspects of the forest conservation program under the
Enhancing Livelihoods through Participatory Forest Management in Northern Tanzania Program. Operationally this will entail mobilizing communities during Participatory land use planning and implementation with PFM villages and District Authorities including the development of by-laws and governance structures, workingwith Enterprise teams in supporting the creation and or expansion of viable forest based enterprises which provide revenues to communities from activities therefore incentivizing forest conservation, working with women groups by developing sustainable livelihood activities which further expand the benefits from the forests, assisting in training of forest village environment committees and forest scouts to
manage and monitor forests and enforce agreed by-laws, developing, coordinating and managing relationships at the field & district levels to ensure smooth running and achievement of desired results of program.With partners, supporting the enforcement of existing forest conservation and management policies, laws and plans in the project area. Working
with the Monitoring & Evaluation team, set out baselines for monitoring and evaluating the progress and impacts of the project.With GIS team, District council team and Village Natural Resource Committees undertake the forest boundary exercise and re-gazettement of the forest maps, report on key community related deliverables of the project in a timely manner according to AWF formats and ensure program lessons are disseminated within and outside AWF for the benefit of sustainable forest conservation. This position will be based in AWF’s Headquarter office in Longido, Tanzania and will report to the Kilimanjaro Heartland Director.
The successful candidate will;
-Have aBachelor’sdegree in Community Development,Sociology or a development related field.
-Have at least 3 years relevant experience consistent with the outlined responsibilities
-Have good understanding and demonstrated experience on Forestry work in Tanzania
-Have exposure to project management principles
-Have excellent written and verbal communicationskills
-Be fluent in English and Kiswahili. Fluency in local languages (Maa) isan added advantage
-Have knowledge of local laws and regulations governing forest conservation in Tanzania.
-Have outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to network strategically and communicate
effectively with a wide group of partners ranging from government authorities to local community
groups
-Ability to work as a part of team
-Motivated and able to work under minimal supervision
