We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, self-motivated, and service-orientated professional for the position of Communications Assistant to the Director General. The selected candidate will assist the Director General with presentations to key partners and audiences about emerging concerns in agricultural research-for-development and CIMMYT’s activities to address them.

The position will report to the Director General and for coordination and administrative support to Director International Communications and Development, and will be based at CIMMYT Main Campus (located 45 km northeast of Mexico City, Mexico). The selected candidate will be expected to travel extensively as required to other CIMMYT’s regional offices throughout Asia, Africa, and Latin America, as well as to conferences and other events attended by the Director General.

The main responsibilities of this position will be:

  • In collaboration with Director International Communications and Development, provide professional support to the Director General to prepare presentations, think pieces, op-ed articles, and manuscripts for diverse for a and publications.
  • Assist in researching, writing and doing presentations and speeches for the DG in coordination with scientists and staff.
  • Assist in organizing DG interaction with donors and official visitors .
  • Assist with the coordination and facilitation of special events, meetings, and activities for the DG during his official travels.
  • Assist in the planning, developing and implementing of communication strategies in liaison with the Communications Program Director and DG.
  • Coordinate public relations for the DG during meetings and events.
  • Research trends (agriculture research opportunities, food security) for the purpose of obtaining knowledge on current issues.
  • Prepare drafts of opinion and research review articles for the DG.
  • Respond to inquiries from various internal and external parties for the purpose of providing information and/or direction.
  • Assist in other CIMMYT communications tasks and initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications, skills and attitudes:

  • BA/MSc in Communication or a related discipline (journalism, etc.). Having a background in Agronomy, Agriculture or Biological Science (preferably relating to agriculture) is highly preferred.
  • Experience in communications, public affairs, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of international development issues, and an interest in keeping abreast of emerging issues via diverse outlets and media.
  • Excellent mastery of Powerpoint and other presentation media, as well as good design skills.
  • Ability to find relevant, compelling source materials (studies, statistics, quotes by recognized authorities, graphics, images) for messaging and use in presentations.
  • Outstanding writing skills in English for diverse audiences and formats.
  • Ability to speak and write in a language other than English, especially Spanish is desirable but not required.
  • Ability to work individually, but also in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural team and under pressure.
  • Extensive travel availability is required.

We will offer an initial contract for 3 years, which is renewable subject to continued need and funding for the position and performance of the staff member.
