We are seeking an innovative, results-oriented agricultural scientist with excellent skills in project coordination. The selected candidate will work as a member of CIMMYT’s Global Maize Program, and will lead the “Nutritious Maize for Ethiopia (NuME)” Project, which is a 5-year (2012-2017) bilateral project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), with the goal of improving household food and nutritional security, especially for young children and women, through the adoption of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) coupled with appropriate crop management practices that increase farm productivity. The Project has a large technology dissemination component implemented in partnership with Ethiopian national public and private sector partners as well as international development partners.

The selected candidate will be a Senior Scientist, based at the CIMMYT Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Specific responsibilities of the position will include:
• Seek, build and strengthen partnerships with public and private institutions for strong impact of NuME Project in Ethiopia.
• Effectively lead and coordinate planning, implementation and reporting of Project activities, including project performance monitoring/measurement, fiscal oversight and budget management.
• Implement and coordinate the Project’s seed systems strategy with project partners to achieve production and distribution of the targeted quantity and quality of QPM seed to farmers in the project districts.
• Provide oversight of Project research programs and capacity building in (i) QPM germplasm development, (ii) food security and QPM efficacy, and (iii) seed production and seed business management.
• Contribute to the Project communication strategy and visibility of the Project achievements.
• Play an advocacy role in the encouragement of public-private partnerships for variety development, release and deployment including alternative seed systems and marketing strategies.
• Ensure that gender equality results are explicitly planned for and part of the deliverables of all Project partners in all activities.
• Identify and facilitate linkages to other relevant CIMMYT projects, as well as projects implemented by other development partners in NuME target areas to encourage exchange and utilization of technologies and outputs between projects.
We are seeking candidates with the following academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:
• Ph.D. in Crop Science/Breeding/Agronomy/Seed systems/Agricultural Economics or a related field with basic understanding of other relevant disciplines and rural development issues.
• At least five years of post-doctoral experience, including management of large Research-for-Development projects involving multiple partners. ? Track record of developing and managing donor-funded, multidisciplinary research projects.
• Good partnership skills, including ability to effectively moderate meetings with partners. ? Excellent written and verbal-communication skills in English.
• A high degree of personal organization and ability to multi-task and to work under pressure.
We will offer an initial contract for 3 years, which is renewable subject to continued need and funding for the position and performance of the staff member.
