FCI is now seeking to recruit a Senior Advisor Social Safeguards. This is a full time position on a one-year term basis (1 May 2012 – 30 April 2013)

The Senior Advisor Social Safeguards is responsible for ensuring that WWF activities on forest and climate maximize the opportunities for supporting and promoting the rights and livelihoods of indigenous and local communities and promoting equitable outcomes. The incumbent will coordinate WWF engagement on forest and climate with representative bodies of forest-dependent peoples and will develop common initiatives that promote understanding, knowledge and beneficial engagement with REDD+. S/he will work with WWF staff and offices as a technical advisor to ensure that activities are implemented in accordance with all relevant WWF social development policies and within accepted social safeguards under the UNFCCC and other relevant bodies. S/he will participate in advocacy efforts to strengthen the design and monitoring of social safeguards in REDD+ and low carbon development at a range of scales.Major Responsibilities
- Coordination - Leads the work of the Forest and Climate initiative (FCI) on social equity, community rights, livelihoods, and gender issues
- Strategy – In collaboration with others, sets overall goals and strategy for WWF’S activities
- Partnerships – Builds relationships and effective communication with key partners
- Cooperative action – Develops initiatives with other NGOs and indigenous people organizations
- Training –Organizes training activities for field staff and partners on relevant aspects of social safeguards, climate change and REDD+.
- Policy guidance and advocacy – Monitors developments in the field of REDD+ and social safeguards. Represents WWF in meetings on these issues.
- Field assistance – Facilitates or provides assistance on community safeguards
- Audit - Works with field offices to ensure that social audits are undertaken on a regular basis.
- Communication - Works closely with IPLC partners, the FCI Knowledge Sharing Manager, FCI Communications Director and others to communicate views on REDD+.
- Fundraising - Helps identify potential donors and supports the development of fundraising proposals and strategies.
- Workplanning, budgeting and reporting – Prepares and reports on annual workplans and budgets.
Required Qualifications
- Education/Experience: Masters’ degree in the Social Sciences, International Development, Environmental/Conservation Policy or related field – or equivalent experience.
- 6-8 years experience working on indigenous and/or social issues in environmental/natural resource management and/or development policy.
Required Skills and Competencies
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of REDD+ and climate change practices, indigenous and social issues related to conservation and/or development
- Strong oral and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to engage major stakeholders in a sophisticated policy dialogue
- At least 2 years experience and skills on project coordination, implementation, report/proposal writing and monitoring
- Experienced on organizing and coordinating trainings, workshops
- Excellent writing skills in English
- Ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary context
- Ability to develop and drive new ideas and approaches
- Fluency in Spanish and/or French highly desirable.
