Organizational Setting |
IAEA Environment Laboratories (NAEL) is a Division of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications and consists of four laboratories, three of which are located in Monaco, and one in Seibersdorf (approximately 45 km south of Vienna). NAEL implements the Environment Programme under Major Programme 2. The part relevant to the marine ecosystem is implemented in Monaco, and the part relevant to the terrestrial ecosystem is implemented in Seibersdorf. The Division operates in a complex matrix environment with inputs from many parts of the organization, such as Technical Cooperation Department for implementation of several projects as well as other Departments for horizontal collaborations. The Office of the Division Director is located in Monaco. The Marine Environmental Studies Laboratory (MESL) is one of three laboratories in Monaco. It is staffed by two professional and four technical support staff. Working with various UN and regional organizations throughout the world, MESL provides technical support for the monitoring and assessment of marine pollution. Research focuses on case studies of inorganic and organic contaminants in the marine coastal zone. MESL supports marine analytical chemistry by producing marine reference materials, organizing global intercomparison exercises, and running training courses for the analysis of pollutants in the marine environment. |
Main purpose |
As a manager and team leader reporting to the Division Director, the Laboratory Head develops and implements the IAEA's policy and programme on providing technical support to Member States for monitor and assessment of marine pollution. The incumbent leads the Section's activities in these areas to ensure the efficacy of the IAEA's programme on a global level, and is responsible for the management of the Section's financial and human resources. |
Role |
The Laboratory Head has several roles. (a) team leader and manager in a specialized, multilateral environment with diverse views on the issues, finding practical solutions and presenting arguments that can achieve results; (b) adviser, providing analysis and background information to the Director on the formulation of strategies and policies related to the Section's technical responsibilities, and facilitating their implementation; (c) coordinator and officer responsible for the technical support of the Section to the IAEA's technical cooperation programme in the relevant fields; (d) facilitator of cooperation with other organizations and with other Departments in the IAEA dealing with this area of work. |
Partnerships |
The Laboratory Head engages with senior counterparts in Member States and in other international and specialist organizations concerned with the technical areas under the Section's responsibility to promote the IAEA's activities and to ensure the IAEA's programme maintains its state-of-the-art level. In developing this approach and managing the Section, the laboratory Head works closely with the Director and the other Laboratory Heads, and with senior staff in the Department and the Secretariat in achieving the desired goals. |

Remuneration |
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $80 629 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $45 878*, dependency benefits, diplomatic status, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
