The IT Unit is responsible for the provision, improvement and maintenance of all information technology infrastructure, applications and solutions being used throughout the organisation. Reporting to the IT Manager, the IT Officer will mainly focus on the development of new tools, customisation of off-the-shelf solutions and programming of add-ins and mechanisms that enable integration between various systems, including for our public website and other web applications. Working within the IT team, the IT officer will also assist in monitoring and maintaining Crisis Group’s systems related to information technology, such as enterprise level business information systems, the email system and on occasion (s)he will assist in the installation of computer hardware and software, the setup of mobile devices and satellite phones and in responding to general support queries.
This is a job requiring not only a sound technology background but also a creative mindset towards the use and implementation of technology and tools for a variety of problems and a pro-active, service-oriented attitude in a generally decentralised organisation with staff often performing very delicate and stressful work in extremely challenging environments.
This position will be based in Brussels, Belgium.
Responsibilities:
Manages medium- and long-term projects embodying the full cycle of a development and/or implementation of an IT system with guidance by the IT Manager;
Monitors and maintains computer systems and networks;
Supports staff members through technical difficulties via various channels of communication;
Troubleshoots system and network problems and diagnoses and solves hardware/software faults.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a relevant field;
Minimum of 1 - 3 years of relevant experience;
Knowledge of 2 or more of the following programming languages: Java, Perl, Visual Basic/C#.NET, PHP;
Knowledge of 2 or more of the following scripting languages: Javascript, AJAX, VBScript, ActionScript;
Knowledge of XML-based languages and XSLT;
Good knowledge of XHTML and HTML5;
Knowledge of Databases and DB design (MS SQL, MySQL , ...), SQL syntax and character encoding;
Knowledge of the full development cycle (including requirement engineering, data and information modelling, use casing, creating proof-of-concepts and building mock-ups, programming, debugging and follow-up/launch activities) and development methodology frameworks;
Good knowledge of Office productivity suites;
Good communication and interpersonal skills and respect for diversity;
Ability to work in a multicultural environment;
Fluency in oral and written English required;
Experience with SiteCore an asset;
Experience with Google Apps for Business and building applications for this platform is an asset;
Experience with Web Application Development is an asset.
