BRAC is an international development organization which works to empower people and communities in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease and social injustice. The organization was first established in Bangladesh in 1972 and is now in 10 other countries:
Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Philippines, and Haiti and has affiliated offices in the USA & UK. BRAC in Tanzania launched its work in 2006 through its livelihood development and microfinance programmes. Both programmes have created opportunities for the poor in agriculture, livestock and poultry. Since, additional programs have been introduced to BRAC’s work in Tanzania: the healthcare programme which aims to prevent illness and treat thousands of Tanzanians and the empowerment and livelihood for adolescent's programme which establishes clubs with a special emphasis on the country's youth and their needs.
