The Web Developer/Administrator will provide technical and management expertise to a team that is responsible for delivering a new website for SUA. The team will be coordinated by a member of SUA Computer Centre staff, but the Web Developer/Administrator will manage the design process and share ownership of the delivery and success of the new site. Our ultimate goal is to build the capacity of the SUA Computer Centre to create and manage the website, and we expect the person in this role to assist in making this happen.
The Web Developer will lead the functional and technical design, development, testing, integration, and training for ongoing support of the SUA website. He or she will work with the SUA Computer Centre to direct aspects of the development lifecycle. The primary responsibility of this position is to clearly define, manage and maintain priorities. The developer will work closely with the staff of the SUA Computer Centre to implement a website that fulfills the needs of the university while using technology appropriate for the area and available resources. A large component of this project will be to provide training to SUA staff on website design, planning and maintenance.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Defining and implementing technical direction for the website;
- Selecting and implementing a CMS software solution including, but not limited to, template creation, security and approval levels, WYSIWYG content editor, versioning, content scheduling, etc.
- Performing and reviewing systems analysis, design, programming, testing, debugging, and documentation for all projects;
- Providing technical and user training and manuals to Computer Centre staff;
- Leading process improvement;
- Providing technical leadership to team and department members, leading through example, mentoring/ influencing others and effectively working with peers, team members, and other departments;
- Creating mechanisms to enable members of academic staff to create and maintain online profiles;
- Creating templates for content storage;
- Implementing website archiving strategies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Extensive Web User Interface Design (UI), Debugging and Cross-Browser Compatible Development Experience;
- Knowledge of online Security Principles;
- Knowledge of automatic backup and mirroring;
- Intermediate or expert knowledge of HTML5, CSS, PHP, Javascript, jQuery, XML,CSS, API implementation;
- Knowledge of web multimedia technologies a plus;
- Analytical capabilities to measure performance and weigh tradeoffs;
- Problem solving and project management skills, with ability to balance competing project and resource demands;
- Cross-cultural interaction across language barriers;
- Team player who can work independently.
Required Qualifications/Experience
- BS in Computer Science, Web Development or related field and/or equivalent work experience. Masters preferred;
- Experience managing the development of a complex website;
- At least five years of experience related to the Web Developer/Web Administrator position;
- Experience with open source content management systems like Joomla, Drupal or WordPress;
- Experience in coaching, training and mentoring staff;
- Familiarity with server administration;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- English language fluency required, Kiswahili language skills a plus
- Background and experience in the East Africa region preferred.
