Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative and clerical assistance to its International Justice Program. The position reports to the Director of the International Justice Program. HRW anticipates that the successful candidate will take up this position in summer 2013.
Responsibilities:
1. Providing administrative and clerical assistance to counsel working on issues surrounding the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, the Special Court for Sierra Leone, and other international justice mechanisms;
2. Maintaining communication among HRW’s domestic and international offices;
3. Preparing, drafting, editing, formatting and distributing documents such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op‑eds, publications and web content;
4. Assisting with research, electronic clipping, wires and translations;
5. Assisting with special events;
6. Retrieving and responding to requests for information;
7. Drafting and editing correspondence and other documents;
8. Scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings;
9. Making travel arrangements;
10. Creating and maintaining extensive contact databases, filing and archiving systems;
11. Recruiting and coordinating interns;
12. Word processing; photocopying; filing; faxing; answering phones; processing incoming mail; and
13. Carrying out other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.
Experience: Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience. Previous work, internship, or volunteer experience in international justice and/or human rights is highly desirable.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
3. Proficiency in other languages, in particular French, is highly desirable.
4. Strong interest in international human rights and international justice is preferred.
5. Strong interpersonal skills are required.
6. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously.
7. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions.
8. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team.
9. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications.
Other: Applicants for this position must possess current US work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from start date.
Salary and Benefits: Salary range starts at $40,310. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days vacation per year.
