Butterfly Works and the Bits schools Butterfly Works is a co-creation studio in Amsterdam with a core team of 10 designers and organisers and countless co-creators across 22 countries. Our Design & Branding team co-creates inspiring products and concepts and accesses global markets and trade networks to establish successful brands. Our Social Campaigns & Learning team works with local communities to create innovative learning programmes and social awareness campaigns, while creatively using new media as an educational tool.
One of the first programmes of Butterfly Works was NairoBits that started in 1999. NairoBits is a digital design school that draws students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Nairobi. The primary objective is to provide youth from disadvantaged backgrounds with knowledge in web design, IT skills, creative multimedia and entrepreneurship to improve their opportunities in employment or venturing into business. In addition, the training develops their character by inculcating in them the critical elements of personal confidence and self-esteem in the life skills trainings.
Owing to the level of success, the concept of NairoBits is replicated to similar settings in other countries. Butterfly Works and NairoBits together developed a franchise model, which has been implemented in AddisBits in Addis Ababa, Kilimanjaro Film School in Arusha, ZanziBits at Zanzibar and KampaBits in Kampala.
The volunteering position at Zanzibits ZanziBits was founded in 2007 with the aim to create a platform for Zanzibar youth with potential and motivation to learn a multimedia and/or specialty and to also facilitate their career development and their interaction with youth across the world.
