The U.S. Mission Addis Ababa is seeking an individual for the position of Consular Assistant in the Consular Section of the Embassy.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
The incumbent carries out various operations to process applications for visas, passports, and other consular services in a timely manner. Advises the unit supervisor about daily/weekly/monthly priorities, case processing capacity of the unit and resource requirements. Serves as a subject matter expert on procedures and provides guidance to Correspondence Unit staff and other members of the staff on case work. Prepares periodic reports used to develop the annual Consular Package report. Transfers files both physically and electronically to and from other posts. Makes requests for files from other posts. Screens consular applications according to applicable immigration laws and Department of State and Department of Homeland Security regulations, ensuring that they are complete and accurate. Screens cases for fraud indicators, and advises adjudicating officers.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
NOTE: All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item. 1. Required Education: Completion of Secondary School education is required.
2. Required Prior Experience: Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in administration, providing government services or para-professional work is required.
3. Language Requirement: Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading English and Amharic; and Level 4 (Fluent) speaking and Level 3 (Good working knowledge) reading/writing of Somalia language is required.
4. Other Skills: Incumbent must have knowledge of Ethiopian civil law as it applies to identity and relationships, and competency in using MS Office Suite is required.
5. Interpersonal skill Requirement: Incumbent must have good working relationship with colleagues and be able to work steadily in a difficult environment and under considerable pressure from highly emotional clients.

When equally qualified, US Citizen Eligible Family Members (AEFM) and U.S. Veterans will be given preference. Therefore, it is essential that the candidate address the required qualifications above in the application.
ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA:
1. Management will consider nepotism/conflict of interest, budget, and residency status in determining successful candidacy.
2. Current employees serving a probationary period are not eligible to apply.
3. Currently employed US Citizen EFMs who hold a FMA appointment are ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment.
4. Currently employed NORs hired under a Personal Services Agreement (PSA) are ineligible to apply for advertised positions within the first 90 calendar days of their employment, unless currently hired into a position with a When Actually Employed (WAE) work schedule.
