BACKGROUND
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the United Nations agency for human settlements, is mandated to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
A key marketing tool for communicating the work of the agency is the publishing and production of a variety of graphic products for dissemination in print and other media.
The Production Unit, Advocacy, Outreach & Communications office, therefore is seeking a talented creative designer, with advanced skills in digital and print design, to assist in developing digital products for mobile devices, tablets and websites and design print publications
RESPONSIBILITIES
The individual will be based in Nairobi, Kenya and will report to the Unit Head of the Design, Publications and Events Unit.
- Perform the work of a graphic design professional by creating a variety of graphic products for dissemination in print and digital media:
- Develop design briefs by consulting with authors and relevant officers to discuss their needs in order to develop suitable concepts;
- Gather information and data to plan presentation of materials;
- Generate new ideas using Adobe Creative Suite, Woodwing and other digital publishing software to present and enhance information;
- Be innovative in redefining the design brief to meet the constraints of cost, time and client;
- Determine size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy, and select style and size of type;
- Apply a wide range of media, including photography, type and illustrations to conceptualize and produce communication products up to the output stage;
- Design interactive interfaces for digital products including the UN-Habitat’s corporate website, campaign and event websites (World Habitat Day, World Urban Forum and World Urban Campaign), social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Scribd and blogs;
- Assist in quality control, ensure corporate identity standards are adhered to, ensure publications are produced in appropriate paper, finishes and digital products are delivered in correct formats;
- Schedule production of jobs in consultation with the supervisor;
- Be responsible for maintaining a comprehensive electronic archive of all work produced.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Completion of secondary education required. Post secondary qualification, e.g. diploma, in graphic or industrial design or equivalent. Excellent command of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator), sound knowledge of online publishing such as Flash, Dreamweaver, HTML5, Flash is essential while knowledge of animation / 3D motion graphics software (After Effects, Premier and Director) is desirable. Portfolio of professional design work is a requirement. University qualification is an advantage.
Work Experience
A minimum of 6 years relevant progressive experience in advertising, print and digital design.
Language
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is an asset.
Other skills
Experience in pre-press production, lithography and knowledge of digital/multi-channel publishing software advantageous.
