BACKGROUND
The BBC World Service Trust is the BBC’s international development arm, which uses media to advance development worldwide. As part of one of the world’s leading media organisations, the Trust is committed to improving the quality of people’s lives in developing and transitional countries through the innovative use of media. The BBC World Service Trust’s South Sudan office is currently launching a large health communications project, which will aim to improve maternal and child health knowledge and practices across the country. Extensive research will be undertaken at all stages of the project by the Research & Learning (R&L) Group and a research manager is required to lead activities.
JOB PURPOSE
The postholder will be responsible for:
- Managing all aspects of research conducted to inform strategy, content and quality and to evaluate the impact of the Trust’s media development and development communications projects in South Sudan.
- Informing research design and developing methods and tools
- Conducting fieldwork
- Contributing to analysis and synthesis of qualitative and quantitative data
- Communicating findings to production teams, management and research colleagues in London through both written reports and presentations
- Overseeing the training and supervision of local fieldworkers
- Monitoring research budgets, in collaboration with research manager, London
Applicants should be experienced in quantitative and qualitative research, with strong design and analytical skills. The position will be based in Juba, with occasional overnight fieldwork trips within South Sudan.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
1. Experience of working at every stage of the research process from research design through to evaluation of project implementation and delivery.
2. Strong experience of quantitative and qualitative research techniques and knowledge of their application for media projects.
3. Previous experience of managing fieldwork and adapting methods to challenging and constrained conditions.
4. Experience of working in challenging and difficult environments
5. Previous experience of conducting cross-cultural research and/or research with diverse audiences.
6. Strong presentation skills and track record of presentations to audiences at grassroots to senior levels.
7. Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills: ability to conduct business at all levels from grassroots to the highest levels of governments and media.
8. Excellent spoken and written English
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
1. Experience in research project management in South Sudan
2. Research experience of media projects (television, radio, film and community media) in a variety of media environments
3. Experienced user of data analysis software such as SPSS and Atlas.ti
4. Formal training in or strong knowledge of social sciences (e.g. psychology, sociology and anthropology)
5. Experience conducting health research
6. Spoken Dinka, Nuer or other local languages
