In Botswana there is need for a comprehensive policy on Local Economic Development (LED) which will encourage partnerships between authorities, businesses and the community at local level, primarily to create better conditions for their economic growth and employment creation. With support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Department of Local Government Development Planning in the Ministry of Local Government intends to implement this noble idea. The focus of LED is to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth as well as enhancing competitiveness of a district, town or local community. The process incorporates various local government and private sector functions such as environmental planning, infrastructure provision, finance and real estate development. Applications are invited for the post of National Policy Advisor to provide expert advice and guide the implementation of LED.
Qualifications:
This is a senior position in the Programme Support Team of the Ministry of Local Government. It requires a self-motivated individual with an advanced degree in economics, urban and regional planning, local economic development, policy development and analysis or a related field with extensive experience in economic development programmes. Applicants should have a minimum of ten years in local (urban and rural) economic development, capacity building and development strategies for micro level investments. Knowledge of small- scale business strategy development, working directly or indirectly with local governments on local economic development will be essential for this job.
