Org. Setting and Reporting
The post is located in the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP), Appeals and Legal Advisory
Division (ALAD). The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of a Senior Appeals Counsel and the general supervision of the Chief of ALAD.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of Senior Appeals Counsel and Appeals Counsel, the incumbent shall perform the following duties:
-Assist in evidence analysis and the preparation of legal argument, motions and other written pleadings and background memoranda;
-Undertake legal research on a diverse range of factual, procedural and substantive issues in criminal law, international criminal law, international humanitarian law using multiple research sources; select relevant material, analyze information and present findings for internal review in either written or oral form;
-Undertake research using computer databases for the purpose of disclosure/discovery obligations, and prepare charts and other written documentation showing the results of that research in order to verify compliance with the applicable law and Rules of Procedure and Evidence;
-Organize all materials needed for the appellate process in electronic and hard copy storage for access to other appeals team members;
-Undertake responsibility to ensure timely and accurate filing of documents and briefs;
-On requests from the Prosecution Division, assist the Trial Teams with legal research and the conduct of interlocutory appeals, motions or such other requests made by the Trial Teams;
-Prepare legal opinions for presentation at the Legal Forum or conference papers as requested; and
-Perform other legal tasks as requested by the Senior Appeals Counsel or Appeals Counsel.

Education
Advanced Law Degree from a University of recognized standing. Advanced studies in International Criminal Law with relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced Law Degree
Work Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of professional legal experience working in a law office, private or governmental, with emphasis on legal analysis, research and writing. Experience in litigation and Criminal law and procedure, desirable. Academic or practical experience in International Humanitarian Law would be a distinct advantage.
Other skills:
Excellent research, analytical, organizational, and drafting skills. Proficiency in most commonly used computer/electronic legal research and data collection tools, including spreadsheets, databases, and word processing applications.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English or French is required. A working knowledge of the other language would be an advantage.
Assessment Method
Candidate will be assessed based on eligibility criteria and competency-based interview.
