Minimum qualification level: National Diploma
Relevant qualification: National Diploma: Civil Engineering
Number of years experience: 2
Core purpose:
To manage the civil engineering laboratory and supervise student practical sessions.
Key performance areas:
- Take responsibility for specific equipment by installing, servicing, upgrading and maintaining this equipment and budgeting for new equipment
- Take control of and maintain civil engineering laboratories and undergraduate equipment and to ensure sufficient consumables are available for tests
- Liase with relevant industry bodies and organisations in order to ensure an efficient service
- Manage the administrative and technical aspects of the technical staff
- Interact with students daily by assisting them with practical assignments, projects and problems
- Provide technical assistance with special functions such as Open Day, short courses, research activities etc
- Take responsibility for safety measures in laboratories and ensure compliance with the OSH act
- Take responsibility for quotes and repairs or new installation of equipment on the financial ITS system
- Assist with research projects and contract work as required
Core competencies:
- An in depth knowledge of civil engineering principles
- Skills and experience in laboratory testing of soils, concrete and asphalt
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer literacy
Additional information:
- Two Years experience in civil engineering construction
- It is recommended that further studies in the BTech Civil Engineering are undertaken
- It is also recommended that the applicant register as a Civil Engineering Technician
