Tanzania is one of eight countries globally to pilot the One UN reform initiative: Delivering as One. The pilot is the UN’s response to the changing aid environment. It calls for the UN to reposition itself to remain relevant, to achieve greater impact on the ground and to become a more effective partner for the Government, in its support to national priorities.
The role of communication towards the realization of Delivering as One is critical for both external and internal partners. The establishment of the UN Communication Group within the UN in Tanzania (UNCG) is a clear indication of the recognition of the significant contribution communication can play in achieving the reform and programmatic goals of the UN in Tanzania.
The UNCG has come a long way in using market research, comprehensive stakeholder surveys, to evaluate the joint work and guide the development of work plans. Two major Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices surveys (KAPS) were conducted in 2007 and 2009 which contain useful information on perceptions of the UN in Tanzania and worldwide among developments partners, government officials, NGO partners, media, and staff. The two reports are available on request.
The results of these surveys have informed the communication strategy of the UN in Tanzania and have also served as benchmarks for performance on improving perceptions of the UN among major stakeholders. The UNCG would now like to conduct a similar KAPS to evaluate the impact of its work over the past three years and determine its strategy and work plan moving forward.
