Relevant qualification: Library & Information Studies

Number of years experience: 3

Core purpose:

Manage the Cataloguing Department and supervise staff in the Cataloguing Department.

Key performance areas:

Management and administration of the centralised Cataloguing Department
Supervision of cataloguing and classification functions relevant to the Cataloguing Module of an Integrated Library System.
Supervision of staff of the Cataloguing Department
Partnership with external LIS professional organisations, including consortia
Maintenance of the Cataloguing Database and assistance with the OPAC maintenance

Core competencies:

Sound knowledge and understanding of international description standards
Ability to correctly interpret and apply relevant cataloguing and classification tools applicable to a specific standard.
Sound understanding and application of the knowledge of ILS, SACat, Worldcat and OCLC
Advanced experience of the principles that govern LCSH and the adding of class numbers
Critical analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
Knowledge of the DDC system
Sound knowledge of the link between cataloguing and the OPAC and the importance of the OPAC to library users.

Additional information:

Candidates must have an M + 4 appropriate LIS qualification and at least 3 years cataloguing experience, preferably in an academic library
