Post Title: Director of Studies
Reports to: Dean, School of Engineering
Responsible for: PA to the Vice-Deans and Director of Studies (shared responsibility)
Main Purpose of the Role
The Director of Studies is responsible for student-related matters within the School, including the provision of pastoral and academic welfare support.
Together with the Dean, Vice-Dean (Teaching and Learning), the Vice-Dean (Research), and the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Studies is a member of the School of Engineering's Senior Management Team.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Exercise the general academic and pastoral oversight of all students (undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research) in the School.
- Participate in the strategic management of the School as a member of the School Management Committee, attending its regular meetings.
- Advise the School and the University on student pastoral and academic welfare issues, and the broader student experience.
- Manage and monitor the Personal Tutor scheme, ensuring the delivery of academic and study skills support, careers guidance and the provision of advice and direction to students experiencing difficulties (academic, financial, medical or personal).
- Ensure that each student's registration, academic progress and examination entry details satisfy the relevant degree regulations.
- Advise students who are academically insufficient or who have failed major examinations as to their possible future actions and, under authority delegated by the relevant University or School authority, to suspend or to exclude a student from further registration at the School, in consultation with the relevant University officer(s) as appropriate.
- Manage the School's student complaints process and, as appropriate, to consult with the University on issues arising.
- Monitor and co-ordinate all aspects of student progress, liaising with relevant School and University staff on issues concerning the general pastoral and academic welfare of the School's students.
- Ensure that all relevant School staff are aware of, and comply with, School and University regulations, and national legislation, concerning pastoral and academic welfare, and to liaise with School and University officers on such issues and their implementation.
- Foster collaboration in the area of pastoral and academic welfare support with the other Schools of the University.
- Participate in the appointment and appraisal of academic and other School staff.
- Deputise for the Dean, internally and externally, on pastoral and academic welfare issues.
- Represent the School on relevant University committees.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of the School's undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
- Undertake a programme of research in a relevant engineering discipline area.
- Follow and promote University policies, including equal opportunities policies.
- Maintain and promote an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety regulations.
- Carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade, purpose and spirit of the post.
