Post Title: Head of Discipline, Civil Engineering
Reports to: Dean
Responsible for: The faculty and students of the discipline, with Associate Professors being direct reports

Main Purpose of the Role
To establish and lead the School's degree programmes in the discipline of civil engineering and to provide leadership and management of the School's teaching and research in the discipline.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership

1. Establish, develop and manage the degree programmes of the discipline of civil engineering, in conjunction with the Dean.
2. Ensure that the degree programmes meet all expectations and requirements in regards to the University's quality assurance and governance regulations and procedures.
3. Ensure that the degree programmes meet the accreditation requirements of the leading professional bodies in the discipline and are regularly accredited.
4. Assist, together with the other Heads of engineering disciplines, the Vice-Dean (Teaching and Learning), in the development of the teaching and learning strategy of the School.
5. Assist, together with the other Heads of engineering disciplines, the Vice-Dean (Research) in the development of the research strategy of the School.
6. Ensure, in conjunction with the Vice-Dean (Teaching and Learning), that innovative modes of delivering the curricula are practised and that the effectiveness of teaching and learning is regularly assessed.
7. Participate in the appointment of an external examiner to the discipline, in conjunction with the Dean.
8. Manage the development and delivery of the degree programmes as chair of the Discipline Steering Committee.
9. Contribute to the management activities of the School and University where required;
10. Promote and comply with institutional and School policies.

People Management

1. Participate in the recruitment of faculty to the discipline, as part of the School of Engineering's staff recruitment process.
2. Day-to-day management and regular appraisal of faculty assigned to the discipline and co-ordination, mentoring and development of direct reports.
3. Report to the Dean any issues relating to faculty recruitment, performance and welfare.

Research

1. Conduct a vigorous, high-level research programme in one or more branches of civil engineering and to provide leadership in these areas.
2. Develop of close collaboration and leadership in research with colleagues from the other engineering disciplines and the University research centres.
3. Generate external income to support this research programme.
4. Develop, in conjunction with the other engineering disciplines and the Vice-Dean (Research), a doctoral research programme for the School of Engineering.
5. Provide training and supervision for research students.
6. Establish productive external collaborations, both nationally and internationally.
7. Publish regularly in high-quality journals and participate in national and international conferences.

Teaching

1. Contribute to the development and delivery of the School's undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in the discipline.
2. Provide and supervise research projects as part of the discipline's postgraduate degree programmes.
3. Maintain records of student progress, achievement and attendance.
4. Contribute to curriculum development.
5. Contribute to the assurance and enhancement of teaching quality for the discipline's degree programmes.
6. Contribute to the recruitment and selection of students to the discipline at all levels.
7. Contribute to the setting, marking and assessment of work and examinations and to provide feedback to students.
8. Foster collaborative teaching with the other schools of the University.
9. Act as an external examiner (undergraduate, taught postgraduate or PhD level) to external institutions, both nationally and internationally.
