Post Title: Associate Professor
Reports to: Head of Discipline (Chemical, Civil, Mechanical Engineering)
Responsible for: A team of Assistant Professors in the discipline area
Main Purpose of the Role
To contribute to the leadership of the planning, development and delivery of the School's programme of teaching and research, and to organise, undertake and support related administrative activity.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching
- Lead a teaching team.
- Plan, design and organise degree programmes and modules.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning methodologies.
- Develop course work, assignments and projects, create reading lists and develop modern teaching methodologies and practices using, for example, Moodle.
- Deliver teaching within new and established programmes of study by means of lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions and tutorials.
- Organise and oversee student projects.
Assessment
- Contribute to the management of teaching quality, including audits and other external assessments.
- Lead the development, administration and marking of examinations and other forms of assessment.
- The external examination of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at other universities.
- Act as a referee and peer reviewer for external bodies.
Curriculum Development
- Provide leadership and innovation in curriculum development
- Lead the planning, development and implementation of the School's curriculum.
Research
- Identify new areas for the School's research.
- Lead the preparation of proposals and applications to internal University bodies and external organisations for funding and contractual purposes, as appropriate.
- Secure funding from external bodies to support School and personal research activity.
- Provide leadership of a research group through developing and designing research programmes, individual investigations and experiments and the supervision, if applicable, of project staff.
- Contribute to School decision making on research proposals, funding decisions and research ideas.
- Disseminate research findings in high-profile internationally recognised peer-reviewed publications and as a principal speaker/discussant at international conferences and research meetings.
- Edit and review research findings and results in learned journals and books.
- Organise and participatein discipline and School seminars sharing research results and building interdisciplinary collaboration within the School and beyond.
- Lead the planning and implementation of commercial and consultancy activity.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research students.
Enabling Activities
- Mentor junior colleagues.
- Establish and maintain a network of senior professional contacts and colleagues in other universities, industry, business and other organisations where the discipline is taught or applied.
- Encourage the building of teaching and research relationships with other Schools of the University and with the University's Research Centres.
Pastoral Care
- Act as a Personal Tutor and being the first point of contact for students
- Refer students to other sources of assistance in the School or University as appropriate or required.
- Ensure that appropriate pastoral care is given to students by other discipline staff.
Administration
- Contribute significantly to the management and administration of a discipline, the School and University by serving on all relevant committees
- Make a significant contribution to the external promotion of the School's and University's activities.
- Maintain class and tutorial registers and attendance records and, when necessary, write student progress reports.
- Maintain and monitor programme documentation.
- Record and analyse student marks.
- Supervise and appraise Assistant Professors.
- Manage a research budget(s) in accordance with University financial regulations and the conditions of the funding body.
