Post Title: Assistant Professor
Reports to: An Associate Professor in the discipline area
Responsible for: Teaching assistants working under the role-holder's supervision
Main Purpose of the Role
To contribute to the planning, development and delivery of the School's programme of teaching and research, and to undertake and support related administrative activity.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching
- Develop course work, assignments and projects, create reading lists and the development of modern teaching methodologies and practices using, for example, Moodle.
- Deliver teaching within new and established programmes of study by means of lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions and tutorials.
- Organise and oversee student projects.
Assessment
- Participate in the development, administration and marking of examinations and other forms of assessment.
Curriculum Development
- Contribute to the planning, development and implementation of the School's curriculum.
Research
- Prepare proposals and applications to internal University bodies and to external organisations for funding and contractual purposes, as appropriate.
- Secure funding from external sources to support personal research activity.
- Contribute to School decision-making on research proposals, funding decisions and research ideas.
- Carry out research work, data gathering, data analysis, participate in meetings about research proposals.
- Disseminate research findings in internationally recognised peer-reviewed publications and at international conferences and research meetings.
- Collaborate with colleagues in planning and implementing commercial and consultancy activities.
- Foster interdisciplinary research collaborations within the School and beyond.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research students.
Enabling Activities
- Participate as a member of a teaching team, collaborating with colleagues on course planning, development, teaching, joint projects and accreditation processes.
- Establish and maintain contact with colleagues in other universities, industry, business and other organisations where the discipline is taught or applied
- Develop a network of professional contacts.
- Contribute to the building of teaching and research relationships with other Schools of the University and with the University's Research Centres.
Pastoral Care
- Act as a Personal Tutor and being the first point of contact for students.
- Refer students to other sources of assistance in the School or University, as appropriate or required.
Administration
- Contribute to Discipline Steering Committee, Discipline Staff-Student Consultative Committee and Research Group meetings.
- Contribute to the external promotion of the School's and the University's activities.
- Maintain class and tutorial registers and attendance records and, when necessary, write student progress reports.
- Maintain documentation for modules taught.
- Record and analyse student marks.
- Supervise and appraise teaching assistants.
- Manage a research budget in accordance with the University's financial regulations and the conditions of the funding body.
Other
- Follow and promote University policies, including equal opportunities policies.
- Maintain an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety regulations.
- Carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade, purpose and spirit of the post.
