The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an executive agency that protects the health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur. We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as bio-terrorist attack or a virulent new strain of disease.
This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest microbiology departments in United Kingdom. The Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP) is collaboration between Central Manchester Foundation Trust (CMFT) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA). The microbiology partnership provides comprehensive services and specialist services to a wide range of hospitals across the North West and beyond.
The Vaccine Evaluation Unit has been the lead laboratory in the evaluation of the meningococcal serogroup C conjugate vaccines in the UK, serogroup A conjugate vaccines for sub-Saharan Africa and currently new vaccines for meningococcal serogroup B disease. The laboratory also carries out evaluation of antibodies to Hib, MMRV, HPV, diphtheria and tetanus.
We are looking for the right individual to take on this post acting as lead scientist for the section within the Unit that specialises in multiplex immunoassays.
The right individual will possess a BSc Hons and PhD in an appropriate biological degree and may, or may not be a Health Professions Council (HPC) registered Clinical Scientist. The post will recruit at Band 7 (£30,460 - £40,157) or Band 8A (£38,851 - £46,621) dependent on HPC registration and experience.
We are looking for an individual with good Information Technology skills with knowledge of specialised immunoassay analysis software and Microsoft Office, who has good communication skills and who can work well as part of a team.
The post is 37.5hrs/week.
The laboratory is accredited by CPA; and we actively encourage CPD activities.
