The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality livestock science, communications and capacity building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI is one of 15 centres supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ILRI has campuses in Kenya (headquarters) and Ethiopia, with other offices located in other regions of Africa (Mali, Mozambique, and Nigeria) as well as in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam) and East Asia (China).
ILRI will be working on a number of CGIAR Research Programs (CRP) that bring together CGIAR centers and partners from the research, development and private sector communities around the world.
This is an international appointment reporting to the Climate Change Programme Leader. This position is on a two year term appointment with the possibility of renewal up to one year, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct research in the following areas:
- Grazing and climate controls on primary production;
- Tree-grass balance in savanna systems;
- Current rangeland condition;
- Greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration;
- Climate change impacts on ecosystem processes;
- Engage with development partners in the humanitarian and climate communities;
- Engage with government partners;
- Publication of journal articles (as lead and co-author) and other publications;
- Communicate research to different types of audience.
Requirements
- An environmental scientist with a PhD in any of the following fields: Ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, Environmental Studies;
- PhD research conducted on carbon, nitrogen, or water cycling;
- Research experience in and knowledge of grassland/rangeland ecology, ecosystem modeling;
- Qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills; data management, numerical modeling experience;
- Excellent demonstrable English writing skills;
- Strong analytical thinker with a problem-solving attitude;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work flexibly in multicultural, multidisciplinary teams;
- A sense of creativity and ability to work independently;
- Willingness to travel throughout Africa.
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Extensive travel to other countries and regions will be required, particularly throughout Africa.
Duration: 2 years with the possibility of renewal up to one year, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
Position level: Post-doctoral Scientist, 4A.
