CARE is seeking an experienced Gender Director. The Gender Director is part of a team dedicated to leading and promoting changes in CARE’s programming that contributes to empowering women and developing equal power among men and women. The Gender Director will lead and foster lasting change in organizational strategies and practices to promote girls and women leadership and empowerment. S/he promotes such changes through consultation, negotiation, influencing, and direct support to the Program, Partnerships, Learning and Advocacy (PPLA) division’s senior staff, Deputy Regional Directors for Program Quality and senior staff from other divisions as well as to country office staff. The Gender Director also liaises with other CI members and external partners. The Gender Director will also engage and maintain relations with CARE International members, in particular those that are very active in promoting gender responsive programs.

•Integrate gender equality and mainstream gender (including mainstreaming of learning from a recent strategic impact inquiry on women’s empowerment) in programs;
•Address (sexual and) gender-based violence, including in conflicts, post-conflict contexts and emergencies;
•Address issues of masculinity and engage boys and men in gender equality and equity; •Address harmful traditional gender practices;
•Promote girls’ and women leadership;
•Support and strengthen coalitions and movements that promote gender equity and women’s political involvement.
Responsibilities:
•Staff Management;
•Provide technical leadership and knowledge management and learning to enhance CARE’s overall program quality through better addressing gender inequalities and injustice and promoting empowerment;
•Develop CARE’s and partners’ staff capacities in addressing gender inequalities and promoting women’s and girls’ empowerment;
•Support fundraising efforts;
•Provide external representation and support advocacy and communications on women’s and girls’ empowerment and gender equality.
Required Skills:
•Master's Degree in social sciences;
•Formal training in gender studies, women’s studies or a research focus on issues related to the job;
•15 years of experience in international development;
•10 years of experience in leading gender equality and equity;
•8 years of experience engaging at a leadership level in the international field of gender equity/women’s empowerment;
•5 years experience as institutional lead in development agency;
•2-3 years of management / supervisory experience;
•Fluency in at least one world language, other than English, preferably Spanish, French, Portuguese or Arabic;
•Interpersonal skills and aptitude to coordinate efforts among diverse groups;
•Extensive demonstrated conceptual and practical knowledge of gender issues, focusing on the history and practice of promoting girls and women’s leadership and empowerment;
•Conceptual and practical knowledge of gender analysis and understanding underlying causes of gender inequality;
•Presentation, process facilitation, negotiating, influencing skills;
•Program design, proposal writing skills;
•Knowledge of donors’ gender strategies;
•Networking and strategic partnerships;
•Knowledge in gender-sensitive impact measurement and of M&E systems.
Desired Skills:
•Ph.D. in social sciences;
•Three years experience in training and facilitation;
•Five years hands-on experience in developing countries;
•Entrepreneurial approach;
•Publishing history.
