The Biotechnology Centre of Oslo (BiO, www.biotek.uio.no) is a centre for molecular biology, biotechnology and bioinformatics within the University of Oslo (UiO), devoted to research and post-graduate training and operating a number of technology platforms. UiO has established and continues to invest in a Chemical Biology platform as an interdisciplinary activity between the Biotechnology Centre of Oslo, the School of Pharmacy, the Dept. of Chemistry and the Faculty of Medicine. The platform is part of a network of screening platforms in ChemBioNet Norway which includes Marbio at University of Tromsø, the SINTEF Materials and Chemistry Platform in Trondheim, and the screening platform at the University of Bergen and is the Norwegian Partner in the European Network of Open Screening Platforms for Chemical Biology, EU-OPENSCREEN (www.eu-openscreen.eu).
BiO is now seeking candidates for the position of:
Chemical Biology Robotics and Automation Specialist
(Position as Head Engineer SKO 1087)

Job description
• The successful applicant will be responsible for running and programming liquid handling systems as well as carry out daily operations and provide technical support for automation equipment. The candidate will work directly with suppliers to maintain the equipment through preventive maintenance procedures and will also be in charge of compound libraries, including preparing plate replication, assay plate preparation and hit picking.
Work tasks will also include assay development, transfer of bench top assays to a high throughput screening format as well as supporting screening activities by running automated in vitro and cellular based assays. The candidate will in addition participate in data management and analysis of screening data using dedicated software packages.
Qualifications
• Qualification requirements include at least a Master degree in engineering or a related area (chemistry, biochemistry or biology). A strong interest in robotic technology, preferably hands-on background, is required for operating, troubleshooting, programming and maintaining automated liquid handling systems. Knowledge of compound management and database handling is desirable. Relevant hands-on experience in assay development and automation is advantageous.
The applicant should be reliable, well organized and have the flexibility needed for working in a service-oriented context. Good written and oral communication skills in English and ability to operate as a team player in a multi-disciplinary environment are required.
• The position is a one-year contract with possibility for extension and is open from August 1, 2011. We seek relevant and highly motivated candidates that are available to start as soon as possible. The position will be included in the Norwegian health insurance and retirement pension schemes and placed as SKO (Position Code) 1087 Head Engineer with salary range step 51 - 65 (NOK 411 00- 528 600) depending on qualifications and experience.
