Organizational Setting

The Physics Section, one of four Sections in the Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences in the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, is responsible for planning and implementing activities in the areas of (i) effective utilization of research reactors, (ii) fostering relevant R&D and applications using particle accelerators and related instrumentation, and (iii) plasma physics and fusion, in order to enable Member States to avail themselves of the benefits of nuclear sciences and technologies.

The Physics Section supports capacity building in basic nuclear science and related instrumentation in the above areas in interested Member States with a view to supporting the creation of infrastructure and development of human resources.

The Nuclear Spectrometry and Applications Laboratory (NSAL), which is part of the Physics Section, assists laboratories in Member States to improve effective utilization of nuclear spectrometry and related instrumentation through the provision of technical advice, training, calibration services, assistance with the modification and development of nuclear instruments and with new applications of nuclear spectrometry techniques in various fields, including energy related applications, environmental monitoring, industry, and the study of cultural heritage objects. The Senior Laboratory Technician reports to the Unit Head of NSAL. The Laboratory is located at the IAEA's Laboratories in Seibersdorf, approximately 45 km south of Vienna.

Main Purpose

The Senior Laboratory Technician provides training support to Technical Cooperation (TC) projects in the field on PC interfaces with scientific instruments, microprocessor applications and software development/modification as well as development and applications of information communication technology (ICT) - based teaching tools and materials.

Working Relationships

The Senior Laboratory Technician works in a team environment with staff at all levels in the Laboratory on issues related to PC/scientific instrument interfaces, applications of microprocessors, and commercial software. He/she has extensive interactions with suppliers and fellows trained in the NSAL as well as occasionally with TC officers and TC project counterparts.

Functions / Key Results Expected

Provide PC interfaces with scientific instruments and applications of commercial software to other research groups at Seibersdorf.
Provide training programmes in PC interfaces with scientific instruments, virtual instrumentation, PC hardware, networking, microprocessor applications and software development/modification.
Modify/update and adapt training kits and ICT-based teaching materials for training in nuclear instrumentation.
Provide technical support to TC projects in the field of nuclear instrumentation including support to and participation in training courses in Member States.
Assist Member States in development and applications of ICT-based training materials and new methods for modernization and maintenance of nuclear instruments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Good computer skills, including experience with programming in applications of scientific and nuclear instruments.
Good knowledge of local computer networks and their administration.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries and the ability to establish and maintain working relations in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
Ability to carefully follow laboratory procedures in a safe manner, preferably when working in a nuclear instruments laboratory.

Education and Experience

Completed secondary education. Post secondary studies in nuclear electronics (or computer sciences) desirable.
At least ten years of relevant working experience in nuclear analytical laboratories.
Extensive experience and knowledge of interfacing of PCs with scientific instruments, virtual instrumentation and microprocessor applications, preferably in the field of nuclear instrumentation.
Experience in training, development and applications of ICT-based teaching materials and tools.
English test (Level 2) to IAEA standard. Good knowledge of both oral and written English essential. Knowledge of another official IAEA language (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) an advantage.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at €44 882 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), six weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance.
