Organizational Setting |
The Waste Technology Section is part of the Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology in the Department of Nuclear Energy. The Waste Technology Section assists Member States with waste management and decommissioning. It covers a broad spectrum of activities and is organized into teams responsible for radioactive waste management (pre-disposal and disposal), decommissioning of installations, environmental remediation of contaminated sites and management of disused sealed radioactive sources. Efforts are focused mainly on the elaboration and implementation of comprehensive and integrated radioactive waste management (RWM) strategies, the development of RWM infrastructure, the promotion of good practices for sustainable, safe and cost-effective RWM and the provision of direct assistance through the technical cooperation programme and nuclear security programme. The IAEA's RWM programme aims to encourage information exchange and experience sharing on various RWM activities, and to promote good RWM practices through the development of technical publications and guidance on the selection of adequate processes and technologies. The Team leader guides the activities in a specific waste technology field, reports to the Head of the Section, and is supported by an average of 3-5 staff members. The current position is in the area of decommissioning and environmental remediation of sites. The objectives of the work are to provide advice to Member States on the planning and implementation of adequate methodologies and technologies for decommissioning of nuclear and radiological installations and site remediation, to collect and disseminate information on good practices for safe and cost-effective decommissioning and site remediation, and to provide direct assistance (through the TC programme) to Member States in the implementation of their programmes and establishment of the required infrastructure for decommissioning and site remediation, and to strengthening their technical capabilities. |
Main purpose |
As a technical expert leading a team, the Team leader manages, co-ordinates, and supervises the IAEA's projects in the decommissioning and environmental remediation field under the guidance from the Section Head and the leadership of the Director. |
Role |
The Team Leader is: (1) a manager planning, leading, coordinating and supervising the activities of a Team in accordance with Member States' needs and monitors their implementation; (2) a substantive expert contributor managing projects of particular complexity and/or sensitivity; and (3) a Scientific Secretary to international scientific meetings related to the decommissioning and environmental remediation field, overseeing preparation and editing of scientific reports, manuals proceedings and other scientific publications; (4) a coordinator of inter-agency collaborative projects with the UN system, reviewing and providing a systematic overview and preparation of technical documentation and papers for discussions. |
Partnerships |
The Team Leader engages high level technical counterparts in Member States' institutions programme planning and implementation to ensure effective transfer and sharing of technical and managerial know-how and promotes partnership building with appropriate UN organizations, NGOs and other relevant institutions. In addition, he/she meets regularly with the section head, other team leaders and colleagues of the Department to ensure effective utilization and integration of all resources (human, financial and technical) received. He/she also works with and coordinates work with technical experts in the Technical Cooperation Department to ensure a seamless integration of all projects and programs. |

Remuneration |
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $80 629 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $52 570*, dependency benefits, diplomatic status, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
