Akilah is a college for young women in Kigali, Rwanda. Our first Diploma, Leadership & Hospitality Management, prepares young women to find meaningful employment and launch ventures in the fastest growing sector of the economy, the tourism industry. In 2012, Akilah is moving to a new campus in Bugesera District. Akilah will add Diplomas in Agricultural Sciences and Business, and will grow to a student population of 1,000 students by 2020.
The Akilah Institute is seeking an experienced leader with the vision and skills necessary to move a high-functioning, mission-driven institute to the next level of excellence. S/he should be committed to leading, collaborating with, and developing a high-performing team of administrators and educators. S/he should be committed to growing the Akilah Institute from a small campus in Kigali to a large residential facility outside of Kigali, increasing the school’s brand identity, promoting the institute’s vision to all constituents, creating an entrepreneurial environment where students gain practical skills, and developing a model of a self-sufficient institute supported by campus social enterprises. This position requires a leader who embodies the mission and spirit of the school and who will be an active, inspiring presence within the school family and in the community beyond its doors.
The Chancellor, under the direction of the CEO, will carry out the mission of Akilah Institute, and provide visionary leadership for the academic and student affairs of the Institute.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Vision
-Together with the CEO, develop a strategy and prioritized action plan for the Institute for Board approval. The plan should address curricular priorities and capital improvements, as well as incorporating social enterprises onto the campus (ecolodge, agricultural programs, etc.) in order to make Akilah Institute a leader and model for innovation and self-sufficient education and a catalyst for economic development.
-Work with the Director of Academics to articulate the long-term vision and strategic plan to guide the development of Academic Affairs within the Institute. Support the staff as the Institute continues to adapt a model of Consciousness Based Education.
-Review strategic choices in determining the priorities that are consistent with the long-term plans of the Institute to make the Akilah Institute a leader and model for innovation and entrepreneurship and a catalyst for economic development.
Marketing/Recruitment
-Supervise and consult with the Director of Admissions and Recruitment to oversee an effective student recruitment and enrollment plan to recruit students from Rwanda and East Africa.
Student Life
-Supervise the Director of Student Life to ensure that Akilah Institute provides opportunities for student growth through extracurricular activities, clubs, community service, etc.
Academics
-Supervise the Director of Academics to ensure that all academic programs meet the standards of the Government of Rwanda and the accrediting bodies such as the Rwandan Education Ministry.
-Work with the Production Manager to develop campus social enterprises that provide training opportunities to students and create earned income streams; create an academic environment that encourages and fosters a spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation.
Finance
-Supervise the Director of Finance in the preparation of preliminary and final budgets; to monitor income, expenditures, collections, and cash flow; to maintain appropriate financial records; to oversee the employee benefit program and payroll; to oversee financial aid and endowment.
-Prepare and oversee the management of the budget for all educational, student life, admissions, and marketing programs of the Institute.
External Relations
-Represent the school to all constituents, including parents, students, alumni, faculty, staff, benefactors, and professional organizations.
-Represent the Institute at academic and civic events.
-Organize ceremonial events such as the Opening Ceremony and Commencement.
-Develop and foster positive and productive relationships between the Institute and its various constituencies to include the Ministry of Education, alumni, the donor community, and the general public.
Staff
-Select and manage full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty members.
-Coordinate the work of the faculty through division chairs, program and department heads, and faculty committees.
-Handle all matters regarding employment and retention of personnel; salaries and contracts; job assignments and performance evaluation; and orientation and training.
Campus
-Responsible for the condition of the physical plant and directs all initiatives for maintenance or improvement with the support of the CEO and Campus Manager.
-Supervise and/or assist with all other aspects of the school’s operation, including (but not limited to) facilities maintenance and operation, food service, transportation, summer programs, and alumni relations.
-Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the CEO.
Requirements
-A proven track record of creative leadership in a comparable academic institution.
A Master’s or Ph.D. and at least 8 years of experience in educational leadership
-Strong interpersonal skills and a reputation for integrity are critical.
-Demonstrated capability to manage complex challenges involving all facets of management.
-International experience is preferred
-Demonstrated ability to work in a start-up environment
-Fluency in English; intermediate level of French is preferred but not necessary
-The ability to think strategically, to be decisive, and to build consensus.
-The ability to motivate, manage, and evaluate employees and to hire new talent.
-An open and collaborative management style; a team builder.
-Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
-Minimum commitment of 3 years is strongly preferred.
