Field Assistant

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is a member of a world-wide network of International Agricultural Research Centers. IITA's research focuses on smallholder cropping systems in sub-Saharan Africa. IITA has a regional hub in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania which co-ordinates the work of the institute in Eastern Africa.
To support this work, IITA is looking for a Field Assistant. This position is required to support the banana project ' .
Duty Station: This is a Nationally Recruited Position and the incumbent will be based at the IITA Office at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NMAIST) in Kijenge, Arusha.
Responsibilities
The Laboratory Technician will observe and make pictures of the different flower development stages
Pollinate the different flower development stages
Maintain excellent breeding records
Oversee bunch harvesting and ripening'
Extract banana seeds·
Score seed production .
Ensure timely delivery of seeds to the tissue culture lab
Assist the banana team in breeding and field activities
Report findings orally and in writing .
Other official duties as assigned by the banana breeder
Required Qualifications / Experience
The candidate should' have a Diploma Certificate in agronomy, pathology, physiology, breeding or- related discipline.
Preferably work experience in agricultural sciences or other research environment
Flexibility, reliability and honesty
Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Kiswahili
Ability to work in a multi cultural environment.
The ability to work independently and as a team member;
