The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization with its Headquarters in Vienna is the international organisation setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the Treaty banning any nuclear weapon test explosion or any other nuclear explosions. The treaty provides for a global verification regime, including a network of 321 stations worldwide, a communication system, an international data centre and on site inspections to monitor compliance.
We seek to recruit a highly qualified candidate for the following positions in the Commission's Provisional Technical Secretariat:
Title of Assignment: | Consultant - Updating the Infrasound Reference Event Database |
Vacancy Number: | VACIDC0008-2012 |
Date of Issuance: | 05-Mar-2012 |
Deadline Date: | 03-Apr-2012 |
Start date: | 1 May 2012 |
Duration: | 6 months with possiblity of 6 month extension |
Assignment:
Background:
The Infrasound Reference Event Database (IRED) is being used on a daily basis by waveform analysts from the International Data Centre (IDC) Division and is being distributed to National Data Centers (NDCs) for advanced studies or for training purposes. The IRED is an important tool for the development of the infrasound technology in the CTBTO.
Project Background:
The IDC processes seismo-acoustic data from the global network of the International Monitoring System (IMS) for three technologies, namely seismic, hydroacoustic and infrasound. The data analysis is done in near-real-time and involves an automated processing and an interactive review of the results performed by expert analysts.
The IDC has developed analysis and visualization tools specifically for infrasound review (e.g. Geotool-PMCC). It has also developed a web-interface (InfraNet) in order to support the analysis work, provide valuable training material to trainees and analysts, and support current infrasound projects. One of the major components for the infrasound training is the IRED which contains a large subset of infrasound events detected by the IMS network and analyzed by the IDC. The database contains events from 2001 until 2011. This database is routinely used to support the infrasound bulletin production and it is distributed to NDC willing to know more on infrasound or working on specific research topics.
Since 2007, the IDC has introduced new analyst procedures to review and add selected infrasound events to the Reviewed Event Bulletin (REB). In early 2010, the IDC began routine automatic processing of infrasound data reviewed by interactive analysis; the detected and located events are now systematically included in the REB. Since 2010, the IRED has sustained only minor updates while the infrasound knowledge was quickly growing. There is a strong need to update the IRED to support the infrasound analysis.
Duties:
Task 1: Update the IRED
Task 2: Update the IRED documentation
The consultant shall work primarily at the office of the Commission in Vienna, Austria and the consultant will undertake duty travel as required in the performance of his/her duties.

Duties:
Task 1: Update the IRED
- The consultant's primary task will be to build and re-analyze the LEB containing infrasound arrivals for the period 2010 – 2011 with the infrasound analysis toolkit (ARS, Geotool-PMCC and InfraNet webpage);
- The events should be incorporated in the IRED with the support of Perl and SQL scripts, based on current documentation and IDC/SA guidance;
- The emphasis will be on the validation of events with external sources as often as possible in order to improve the quality of the database. Non-validated LEB with infrasound arrivals should be saved in a new category of the IRED (subset named: LEB); and
- When deemed necessary, the consultant will input corrections in the IRED as indicated by IDC/SA.
Task 2: Update the IRED documentation
- The IRED documentation provided to IRED users should be updated according to the modifications and updates obtained from Task 1;
- Summarize the content of the IRED, extract its main features and assess them. Summarize each subset categories and their results in the same manner; and
- Work on identifying potential areas for improvement of the IRED and its overall quality. The improvement should be summarized in a document and submitted to IDC/SA staff, prior to their possible implementation in the IRED.
The consultant shall work primarily at the office of the Commission in Vienna, Austria and the consultant will undertake duty travel as required in the performance of his/her duties.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of seismo-acoustic signals and infragenic sources. Basic notions about infrasound wave propagation in the atmosphere that affects the detected signals at IMS stations would be appreciated;
- Knowledge of IDC software for interactively reviewing seismo-acoustic data from the IMS network, especially the Analyst Review Station (ARS) and Geotool-PMCC software;
- Experience in the fusion of multiple waveform technologies, particularly using infrasound data in combination with seismic and hydroacoustic results;
- Experience working with the Oracle database. Experience with SQL and Perl. Knowledge of the IDC database structure would be appreciated;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; and
- Knowledge of the structure and physics of the atmosphere would be appreciated.
Competencies:
Conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results and be able to work independently with minimum supervision. Very good skills in communicating with people from different backgrounds and demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment.
