The American Red Cross seeks an Information Architect to support the information and knowledge management needs of the Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC). This includes providing immediate support for data collection and analysis, designing an effective knowledge management system for a state-of-the-art resource center, and piloting of complementary knowledge management initiatives in conjunction with the wider International Services Department (ISD). The position reports directly to the Director of the GDPC in the ISD.
Responsibilities:
•Assess the range, nature and flow of data in other global resource centers to inform the creation of effective knowledge management system(s) for the GDPC.
•Based on analysis, develop effective knowledge management strategies and practices for the GDPC that will facilitate efficient collection, storage, distribution and use of knowledge (eg. sharing of good practices, lessons learned, evaluations, etc)
•Support ongoing information management needs as they pertain to the GDPC (eg. organizing research findings) using data tracking systems that are aligned with other sides of ARC’s International Services, ensuring interoperability with program management and geographic information systems.
•In coordination with other ISD teams, maintain visibility on best practices in humanitarian information management, both in and outside of the Red Cross community, to successfully adapt and improve ways to harness data with new technologies that will enable ARC to build and maintain a cutting-edge service-oriented GDPC. This may include piloting projects to test viability, functionality, etc.
•Regularly interact with ARC (domestic and international) program and IT staff at headquarters and in the field to understand evolving requirements, business processes and opportunities for improving GDPC knowledge management practices. Ensure GDPC tools have high degree of adaptability and flexibility to accommodate dynamic needs.
•Oversee the creation and evolution of a GDPC website, supervising the website developer
•Support the production of reports that analyze program trends and translate information into visual displays, including graphs, charts and maps
•Perform other job-related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
•BA/BS with a minimum of three years professional experience in information and knowledge management, library science, or related fields. Focus on supporting work in developing countries preferred
•Experience in designing, building and modifying databases and/or other software
•Experience supporting data collection, organization and analysis
•Deep knowledge and experience in information architecture, including how databases interface with web-based applications and geographic information systems
•Strong IT, writing, editing, and analytical skills
•Excellent attention to detail and initiative to problem-solve
•Ability to multi-task in a high pressure team environment, responding to needs of diverse client base
•Good interpersonal skills and diplomacy
•Flexibility to meet unpredictable business needs, including occasionally working long hours and on weekends
•Familiarity with the American Red Cross and/or the global Red Cross network and commitment to basic Red Cross principles
•Experience living and working in a diverse or international environment (preferred)
•Working knowledge of French or Spanish (preferred)
•10-25% Travel
