Associate Professor (SKO 1011) in Comparative and International Education – Department of Educational Research
A position of associate professor is available at the Department of Educational Research, University of Oslo, in Comparative and International Education (CIE). The selected candidate is expected to contribute to the further development of the CIE area at the Department, especially with respect to its status as a prioritised research area. In addition, the candidate is expected to teach at the Masters level in the English language CIE programme, and might also be involved in teaching activities at the Bachelor level. The supervision of doctoral students and the development of doctoral courses will be part of the tasks of the candidate. The candidate will be integrated into the CIE group, led by a full professor.
Comparative and International Education is one of the academic priority areas at the Department and the Faculty of Education. Next to being a prioritised research area, the Department also hosts the CIE Masters programme. Its main focus is to provide theoretical and practical understanding of the interrelationship between educational and societal processes and their manifestations in international and national policies and practices and education systems in the North and the South. It has an annual capacity of up to 30 students. The student cohort starting in August 2010 consisted of 27 students from 20 different countries.
Requirements
The successful candidate must be fluent in English for all professional purposes. The candidate must hold a doctoral degree in educational sciences or another social science discipline which is relevant for academic work in the CIE area. It is required that the candidate has done comparative research and/or in depth studies in education in several countries. Familiarity with both qualitative and quantitative research methods is desirable. The candidate is required to have experience with teaching international degree students, preferably at the Masters level.

- Copies of educational certificates (degrees and diplomas) and letters of recommendation.
- Copies of up to 10 published scientific/scholarly works which the applicant would like to submit for evaluation, plus a short review/characterisation of each of these.
- Other relevant qualifications/documentation as appropriate.
- Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)
Four copies are required of the application, the CV, and the other documents attached. Please remember that all documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language.
Evaluation of the application
In the evaluation of the applications, emphasis will be given to the academic prerequities to contribute to the further development of the CIE area at the Department, especially with respect to its prioritised research status, as well as the international experience of the candidate in the CIE area. Also the teaching experience of the applicants is of importance in the evaluation.
An interview is usually part of the final stage of the process of appointment and a public lecture may also be required.

Furthermore, although the language of instruction in the CIE programme is English, communication in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language may on occasion be more efficient, including for administrative purposes. Therefore, if necessary, the successful candidate must acquire needed language skills in Norwegian within a reasonable time period.
