Purpose:
The Student Equity and Talent Management Unit at Wits is looking for a researcher for 2012 who will serve on a 12 month contract. Primary outputs include: conducting literature reviews; developing and improving research and evaluation instrumentation; conducting focus groups and systematic observations; collecting, coding, analysing and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data and reporting on findings; conducting educational and psychological research under the guidance of a research psychologist
Key responsibilities include the following:
- Demonstrate an advanced critical awareness in appropriate disciplinary areas;
- Good level of research skills;
- Excellent knowledge and experience of quantitative research methodology and design including the use of statistical software such as STATA, SAS, R or SPSS;
- Excellent knowledge and experience of qualitative research methodology and design, including the use of qualitative software such as Atlas TI;
- Excellent knowledge of Excel, Word, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Project;
- Versatility to apply quantitative and qualitative methodologies to subject matter across disciplinary boundaries;
- Practical experience in implementation – oriented research;
- Strong user orientation, based on commitment to human and social research that makes a difference;
- Ability to access, process, communicate and produce information and research findings using a range of technologies in an accessible manner to 1) academics, 2)students 3)stakeholders, 4) the broader public
- Presented a conference research paper at a minimum of one national conference
Requirements, attributes and skills:
- Research Masters degree in Social Science (preferably Psychology, Education, Social Work, or Sociology);
- Minimum of 2 years relevant experience;
- Critical analytic competence and problem solving;
- Clear commitment to transformation, access to higher education, and social justice;
- Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination and drive;
- Able to work effectively as an individual; in multicultural teams and multidisciplinary environments;
- Excellent writing skills;
- Demonstrate initiative and commonsense;
- Ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines;
- Ability to meet conflicting demands;
- Ability to follow through on plans, report on these and assist the project manager in general project administration;
- Administrative skills incl. good phone etiquette, the ability to follow up, file and retrieve data, respond in a timely manner to emails and phone messages.
