Description:

The Wits School of Education has recently created an exciting new division of Languages, Literacies and Literatures and is seeking a full-time person who is able to contribute to the School’s undergraduate professional programmes and postgraduate programmes in this area. The school prepares teachers to teach IsiZulu, Sesotho, Sepedi, English and Afrikaans as first or additional languages. It offers Majors in these languages as well as innovative courses in New Literacies for Teachers, Methodology courses, taught by multi-language teams, and an established and highly regarded suite of postgraduate offerings in Applied Language Studies. Exciting possibilities exist for a successful applicant to join us in an established and vibrant community of educators and researchers at Wits.

We wish to appoint a suitable person to the position of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer

Qualifications and Experience:

The successful applicant must meet the following criteria

• A PhD in Language and Literacy Education or Applied Language Studies
• Evidence of research productivity
• A track record of competent teaching in the area of language and literacies education.

Further advantage will accrue to applicants who have

• Experience of teaching language as both first and additional language
• Recent experience of teaching at school level as well as knowledge of the South African school system
• Tertiary level experience (especially in teacher education and/or academic literacy)
• Knowledge of an African language
• Evidence of organizational ability
• Good computer skills
• An ability and willingness to work in teams.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, to supervise students on school experience, to supervise postgraduate research up to doctoral level, to engage in research, to attract research funding and to publish.
