Job Description Overview:
This position is located in Burundi, East Africa. The Country Director manages activities in Burundi from a programmatic and operational perspective, and leads fundraising efforts and community relations in-country. The Country Director works closely with the project manager, the in-country director of internal relations, the medical director and the rest of the team on the ground. This position reports to senior VHW staff in New York City and collaborates closely with New York City-based teams working in the areas of finance, development, communications and operations. Applicants should be available to start immediately, and prepared to make a two-year commitment.
Essential Duties
Program Development and Implementation
• Define program priorities, plans and long-term strategy guided by VHW's mission and vision through close collaboration with the Medical Director and Executive Director; manage and modify their implementation based on existing in-country realities; • Document and communicate results, drawing from a monitoring and evaluation system; • Stay abreast of best practices to ensure that the project’s work remains highly innovative;
Financial Management
• Ensure absolute financial compliance both with U.S. laws and donor requirements; • Identify potential shortfalls and strategize to ensure the program’s financial sustainability. Staff Management and Development • Develop and manage a team of diverse staff members, modeling strong leadership, strengthening capacity of national staff, and recruiting highly qualified additions; • Ensure compliance with VHW Code of Conduct Manual policies and procedures and local labor laws;
Organizational Representation
• Develop and maintain proactive, positive and professional relationships with all of our local stakeholders, who include the communities we serve, partner and potential organizations, other NGOS, donors, clients, key government officials, civil society groups, local community sub-committees, in-country executive counsel, etc.; • Lead activities on the ground meant to build VHW's visibility and presence in-country,
Minimum Skills and Experience:
• Doctorate or Masters degree in relevant field (e.g. Public health, medicine, business); • Five years experience in managing successful and complex programs, ideally in public health and ideally in a fragile, post-conflict environment • Experience designing and overseeing reporting, monitoring and evaluation systems; • High proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft word; Social media and database experience a plus; capability to quickly master new software applications • Demonstrated financial management and donor reporting skills; • Able to communicate in professional functions (written and oral) both in English and French; • Demonstrated interest in social justice and global health care.
