Geographical Information System (GIS) Manager

ran'iarl'fi{'to i'';'plement the Landscape Scale Community Centred Ecosystem Conservation in Western Tanzania
also known as Gombe-Masito-Ugalla (GMU) program. This four-year program is now in its second year of
implementation and covers about 52 villages in Mpanda and Kigoma districts. The goal of the program is to
conserve biodiversity with an emphasis on chimpanzees as a keystone species and protect and restore wildlife
habitat in critical ecosystems in Western Tanzania. The program implements a holistic approach that integrates
and addresses priority socio-economic needs of the communities. JGI Tanzania is an equal opportunity

qualified and competent Tanzanian to fill the Geographical Information System (GIS) manaqer position under
the following conditions:
Pesltlon Title: Geographical Information Manager (one position - Kigoma Municipal)
The program seeks to collect, analyse and utilize geospatial information for advancing conservation in the
program villages by involvinq local leaders, communities, program and government staff in the participatory GIS

process, from data collection to the use of information to improve conservation decisions. It also includes
capacity building among program staff and key partners.

Specific duties and responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Program Director the incumbent will be responsible to;
1. Collect, organize, manage, and update spatial geodatabases for western Tanzania.
2. Conduct advanced spatial analysisand/or modelling to support development and implementation, of
Conservation Action Plans (CAP) using Open Standards and participatory village land use plans (VLUP)
in the region. '
3. , Maintain geospatial data on village land use plans, landscapes, forests, habitats, chimpanzee and other
wildlife populations, rural infrastructure, development, and natural resources in the region.
4.. Support JGI programs and partners with cartoqraphe services including design of paper and web maps
that creatively and effectively communicate findings and conservation priorities.
6. Analyse and summarize forest, wildlife and illegal human activities data collected by Village Forest

and 'written reports .to be shared with the local communities, I government officials, TANAPA and other
decision-makers.
7. Train JGI staff and project partners in basic GIS, GPS and mobile data collection using smartphones and
tablets.
8. Support the VP of Conservation Science in developing and implementing a JGI wide Enterprise GIS
platform using ArcGIS Online and support implementation of an Applied Conservation Science strategy.
9. Manage and maintain the GIS lab hardware resources including mobile devices (smartphones, GPS and
tablets), servers, plotters, workstations, UAVs and laptops.
10. Coordinate with ,IT to ensure reHable operation and access to the Internet for data uploading and
downloading.
11. Coordinate maintenance of shared resources like plotters and GIS laptops and provide advice' about
GIS-related hardware requirements during procurement process
12. Prepare and submit activity reports in a timely manner

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or higher in GIS, geography, conservation biology, wildlife biology, ecology, environmental
studies, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with 5+ years of professional experience or a - -,
graduate degree. Mu~t be skilled in operating ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, and ArcGIS Online and Spatial
Analyst (3 + years experience).
Additional Skills:
• Must be able to e,ffectively operate and troubleshoot computers (PC), printers, data storage and mobile
devices, and related software, including the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
• Expertise in map design is required-work samples may be requested.
• Experience in spatial analysis of natural resource data Is required.
• Ability to manage large, complex datasets and databases is required.
• Excellent oral and written communications skills in English and Swahili and th'e ability to synthesize and
communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Other desirable attributes (not required to apply): interest or experience in conservation planning using
Open Standards and using Miradi software, primate conservation; knowledge of Tanzania conservation
Issues; technical skill with statistical analysis; coding experience (e.g. webmaps, geoprocessing scripts).
," ; Ability to' work indepenci~ntiy and' in 'a team environment with confiicting deadlines while effectively
managing priorities and meeting deadlines.
• Ability to work some evenings or weekends as the job demands. Occasional travel within Kigoma and
Mpanda region's including to remote and wilderness areas, is required.
• Interpersonal skills and able to interact with the communities and local governments.
