Marie Stopes Kenya is an affiliate of Marie Stopes International, fully responsible for development and implementation of its programme in Kenya. MSK engages in family planning (FP) and sexual reproductive health care (SRH) through various interventions, in collaboration with Government of Kenya (GoK), various implementation partners and other stakeholders. These interventions include the management of 26 medical centers country-wide, 15 outreach teams, and engaging with nearly 300 social franchising partners. Its programme is supported by a wide range of donors, including DfID, The Packard Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, AusAid and other Marie Stopes affiliates.
Position Objective:
The Project Manager – EC will be overall responsible for ensuring that the European Commission funded project ““reduced maternal, newborn and child mortality though scaling up and strengthening integrated sexual and reproductive health, maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition service provision in Kwale County” of MSK will deliver on its overall objective and realize set targets.
He/she is responsible for the management and coordination of all aspects of the project. This includes, overall grants monitoring and compliance, ensure regular reporting to MSK and donors is carried out in a timely and qualitative fashion, manage a team of three staff responsible for community lead initiatives and service delivery through social franchising, and while ensuring adherence to internal and donors’ procedures and guidelines.
Place in the organization
The Project Manager – EC reports to the Senior Programme Manager. He/she will manage and lead all aspects of this 3 year project. In ensuring that quality programming objectives are met, he/she will actively interact with the Country Management Team (CMT) members, Social Marketing, Outreach and Social Franchising Managers, Quality and Technical Assurances (QT&A) and M & E teams, support units including Logistics, Finance and HR. He/she will also engage with external stakeholders, including local government, implementation partners and donors. The position is based in the Regional office in Mombasa, with frequent travel to the operational areas and Nairobi for internal review meetings.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the development and implementation of quarterly work plans and budgets to ensure smooth operation of all project activities. • Lead the preparation of all donor reports, including interim and annual, consistent with donor regulations and protocols. • Lead the preparation and management of project budgets. • Lead all implementation of the project, including capacity building initiatives, service delivery, partnership management, demand generation, monitoring and evaluation and private sector engagement. • Prepare and coordinate procurement requests for goods and services for the project. • Develop relationships with all critical stakeholders; share relevant information as required, build synergies between activities, partners and different components of the project. • Coordinate information sharing across MSK departments and service delivery channels, including outreach, clinics and social franchising. • Oversee and manage community mobilization and community led initiatives for the project, and manage two staff members who oversee engagement with community health workers and youth peer educators and health education and promotion campaigns • Assist in all research and monitoring and evaluation activities for the project, including a baseline survey, operational research, best practices, data collection and coordination and on-going monitoring of project performance.
Outputs and deliverables:
• The project team have delivered on their set targets in qualitative and timely fashion; • Budgets are spent in accordance with plans, and any foreseen deviations timely addressed; • CMT is regularly updated, through the Senior Programme Manager, of the performance of the project. • Donors are timely informed, through reports, of progress on the activities; • Active engagement with donors will have been maintained and strengthened.
Knowledge, Experience and Competencies
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, such project management, health; • Excellent written and oral English and Kiswahili; • Computer software literate; • A minimum of five years of project management in similar context, preferably in a SRH health-based project, is required; • Proven analytical skills in budgets and financial reports; • Proven experience in report writing. • Ability to work individually and within a team environment: experience in managing a team. • Team-player with good interpersonal skills • Ability to perform under pressure • Flexibility and ready to respond to unforeseen developments • Experience in working within the community targeted essential
