Background:

Children in Crisis (CiC) is a UK registered INGO established in 1993 to give children in some of the world’s poorest countries the education they need to help transform their lives. Our vision is that all children receive the learning needed for their flourishing and well-being and we specifically seek to improve the lives of children who are hidden and left behind for reasons of conflict, isolation, discrimination and lack of resources. We work in conflict and post-conflict countries and in remote areas poorly served by others. We have been working on the remote Plateau region of South Kivu, eastern DR Congo since 2006, delivering a wide-ranging teacher training and community sensitisation programme to all primary schools with our local partners Eben Ezer Ministry International.

The role:

Children in Crisis is seeking an experienced international development professional to conduct a 6-week consultancy, up to 4-weeks of which will be spent in DR Congo, ideally starting towards the end of May 2013. The candidate will be an education expert with excellent working knowledge of curriculum development and teacher training programmes in a resource-poor context.

Objectives:

i) A review of the current modules (both content and layout) and of how the current training is delivered, with a view to identifying cores areas for revision and suggested change; ii) Amendment of the modules in collaboration with the project team and the local education authorities and in alignment with the Congolese Education System; iii) Workplace training and support (i.e. through workshops with the training team) to improve the delivery of the revised modules; iv) Final work-up of the modules that will be used in the final year of the programme and submitted to the Ministry of Education and within the Education Cluster for replication and use elsewhere.

Person Specification:

You will have demonstrable experience of working in Francophone African education systems on the development, piloting and publishing of primary teacher training materials. You will have fluent spoken and written French, excellent inter-personal and communication skills and have a passion for working to improve education for some of the hardest to reach communities in the world.
