BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries. To achieve this, it partners with civil society, local media and governments to:

• Produce creative programmes based on robust research in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.
• Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

Overall Purpose of the Job
BBC Media Action is starting a new project in South Sudan aimed at delivering accurate Family Health information through the media. Through the production of multiple media outputs on radio, as well as outreach strategies, training for local language partner stations and NGO partners, the project aims to shape knowledge, attitudes, norms, self-efficacy and societal support for change around key reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health issues.

The project will generate two radio outputs:
• A magazine style programme in English and Simple Arabic incorporating key health information segments which can be re-used and translated into local languages by partner radio stations and rebroadcasters.
• A weekly radio drama in English and Simple Arabic produced by an external drama/production group to BBC editorial standards.

The project will also support local language radio outputs in partner stations and coordinate Health Information Networks in areas where our partner stations are working.

The Field Producer/Trainer is responsible for delivering journalism and production training at regional radio stations around South Sudan, mentoring partner station staff to deliver stories for the magazine programme, supervising local language translations of programmes and facilitating dialogue between health stakeholders and journalists.

Person Specification - required knowledge, skills and experience
• Experienced radio journalist, should be able to demonstrate experience in using the latest recording and audio editing software.
• Proven experience in delivering journalism and production training.
• Working experience at community based radio stations in South Sudan.
• Willingness to travel around the country on a short notice if required.
• Self motivated, able to deliver to programme deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Creative thinking and the ability find solutions and execute them.
• Able to communicate effectively at all levels within the organisation.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities at the same time.
• Strong team player; able to work effectively under pressure and demonstrate patience to team members
• Strong knowledge of and interest in a range of issues including Maternal and Child Health, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Child Protection.
• Fluency in written and spoken English and Simple Arabic. Ability to communicate effectively in major South Sudanese languages will be an asset.

Main Duties
• To work closely with the Project Director to develop a customised training plan for each partner station. This will include a mix of on-site and remote mentoring via phone calls and email.
• To take part in training provided by an international BBC Media Action trainer and participate in follow up training if required.
• To travel to selected radio stations on a rotational basis and work on site at each location for up to one week, delivering journalism training with a focus on Maternal and Child Health.
• To help identify and mentor talented journalists from partner stations to work part time with the BBC Media Action producers generating content for the national programmes and translating key messages from the programmes into local languages.
• To monitor the quality of the local translations and ensure that the key health messages are accurately relayed.
• To ensure that local translations generated at partner stations meet BBC editorial standards.
• To monitor the consistent broadcast of BBC Media Action programmes by partner stations.
• To facilitate information sharing between partner radio stations, Government health workers and local NGOs/CBOs working on local health issues. e.g. local immunisation campaigns
• To assist the research team in the delivery of audience research for the project.
• To support the production team in Juba when required.
