BBC Media Action is the independent international charity of the BBC. Our mission is to improve the quality of people’s lives in developing and transitional countries through innovative use of media. We do this through our focus on health, governance, livelihoods, climate change and humanitarian response. We aim to stimulate the level of public debate and discussion as well as improve the level of media production standards in the Palestinian Territories. We use different media formats to develop high quality interactive debate programmes enabling citizens to hold government and its services to account. As Director of Projects you’ll be responsible for managing all of BBC Media Action’s work in the Palestinian Territories.
Expanded Department BBC Media Action also has extensive experience in broader fields of media development including capacity-building, editorial and output reviews, training needs assessments and change management and reconstruction. Its work is focussed around three key themes: governance and human rights, health and humanitarian response. We work in partnerships that include governments, broadcasters, civil society institutions, donor agencies and international Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
Role The Palestinian Territories are included in a Global Grant that Media Action has been awarded by the UK’s Department for International Development. In this senior role, you’ll manage BBC Media Action’s work in the Palestinian Territories and produce participatory programmes on multimedia platforms with local partners. You’ll support and further develop standards of ethical journalism in the media sector and ensure that all Media Action Projects are successfully implemented, and completed within the agreed budget and timescale. As well as effective and efficient management of projects, you’ll make the most of available resources to guarantee delivery of these projects to the agreed objectives.
Expanded Role Informing, consulting and maintaining good relations with all the interested parties is a key aspect of this role and as well as this you’ll deliver coaching and training sessions in conjunction with the training team. You’ll monitor the projects and their budgets, reporting regularly on their implementation. And you’ll also ensure that all projects are managed in a way which reflects the editorial and ethical values and standards of the BBC and our partner organisations. This will include observing all requirements of the legal framework within which the BBC operates.
Requirements We need your experience in managing complex development projects in the Middle East along with your substantial programme making and editorial experience. Financial expertise and experience of managing intricate budgets will be key to your success and of course your project management skills will be fully utilised. As will your history of managing people or leading teams. A real enthusiasm for training will assist you in this role and with your sound editorial judgement; you’ll be fluent in written and spoken English.

Your excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills will work in conjunction with your good knowledge of the region General experience in media development would be an advantage and you should preferably have managed a significant development project in the field. With your experience of training in difficult environments a distinct benefit, knowledge of the priorities of international donor agencies and experience of working with them would also be a plus. An understanding of, and enthusiasm for, developing technologies including online and digital.
