Director of Individual Giving

Plan is a child-centered international NGO working to reduce poverty among children and their communities in 50 developing countries. It raises funds from individuals, institutional donors and corporates in 20 countries, mainly situated in the so-called North.

Plan’s 2015 strategy aims to reach as many children as possible, particularly those who are excluded or marginalised with high quality programs that deliver long lasting benefits.

http://plan-international.org/about-plan/how-we-work/strategy

Critical to the strategy’s successful implementation is a significant growth in resources by 2015. At present Plan’s worldwide income is almost Euro 600m annually and the strategy requires that this income level grows by at least 50% within the next four years.

This post’s focus is on pursuing and realising the full potential of individual giving (including sponsorship) across Plan, in line with the income forecasts developed in November 2011.

Child sponsorship by individuals and their families contributes some 65% of Plan’s current income. The dedicated commitment of sponsors provides Plan with both flexible and long term funding which allows it to operate with confidence for considerable periods in the communities where it is tackling high levels of child poverty

A recent review of sponsorship has recognised Plan’s long association with this highly effective method of resource mobilisation. But It has challenged Plan’s management to look for new ways to both maintain and grow this revenue stream. Implementing the findings of this review is the central part of the responsibilities of this role.

In addition, Plan has developed innovative ways in which individuals can support our work. These include options to donate regularly to support specific projects or themes including those designed to support girls, street children, disabled children and other marginalised groups.

Working effectively with colleagues in Plan National Organisations (NOs) and Plan International field programmes, the post-holder will support the design and marketing of these individual-giving opportunities, and others which will be developed in the future. The portfolio will include products which target marginalised groups which cannot be reached by the traditional sponsorship model.

Main responsibilities

Plan will have a full strategic understanding of the current workings of the sponsorship model and will have introduced necessary changes to revitalise it by 2013.

Implement the agreed findings of the 2011 Sponsorship Review after ratification by senior-management groups in Plan and where appropriate by the International Board and Members’ Assembly. These include:

  • Ensure Plan fully incorporates the “promise” to individual donors and the corresponding obligations to the sponsored child and his/her family into our sponsorship model.
  • Review sponsorship processes at all levels to increase efficiency and attractiveness of sponsor communication, using new technology to cut costs and/or speed up communication with individual sponsors.
  • Develop, with the relevant senior teams, policies to govern the establishment of, and exit from sponsorship funded operations at field level, taking account of the reputational and developmental risks and potential loss of income.
  • Share best practices in marketing sponsorship to current and potential donors in the twenty NOs geographies, and how other individual giving opportunities can be created for this very large group of supporters.
  • Contribute to discussions about the developmental impact of the sponsorship process.

All parts of Plan will be working towards the development of new and existing individual giving products which are complimentary to other income streams.

  • Lead, with relevant partners in Plan, on the piloting and development of new products for individual giving.
  • Ensure Plan develops opportunities for individuals to fund our work with marginalised groups, especially girls, and share best practice and marketing excellence with the NOs and programme countries to scale these opportunities up.

Key performance indicators will be established to monitor efficiencies and income results

  • Analyse and review data relating to individual giving and interpret the strategic implications of it to senior management and where appropriate, the International Board and the Members Assembly
  • Report progress against agreed targets for sponsorship income and other sources of individual giving to 2015.
  • Ensure agreed measures are adhered to and where no measures exist, devise appropriate ones
