About us:
The Micro Insurance Academy (MIA), a project of Sarvajan Unnati Bodhini Charitable Trust, is a not-for-profit organization fully dedicated to providing technical assistance in microinsurance domain-knowledge to low-income communities and organizations supporting such communities. With over 50 professionals including researchers, training specialists, economists, risk modelers, development experts, project managers and support staff, the MIA is the largest microinsurance resource center globally. MIA is also developing additional resource centers outside India, notably in association with MIA International, a non-profit members’ association registered in Bonn, Germany.
The MIA works with partners from the NGO sector, civil society, academia, bilateral and multilateral development agencies, the (re)insurance industry and national governments in several regions of the world, with the view to integrating microinsurance with financial and social protection frameworks and objectives.
The MIA assists in the implementation of microinsurance based on our ISO certified training, unique implementation process, and several proprietary tools. We understand microinsurance as the insurance of persons in the informal sector that would otherwise not have access to affordable, context-relevant insurance; MIA’s microinsurance implementation process empowers target communities to participate in decisions to ensure demand-driven, tailored insurance solutions that match people's needs and ability to pay. We do this through a process that the beneficiaries understand, trust and take responsibility for. In a nutshell, MIA’s mission is “helping communities manage their risks from the ground up”.
