KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Provide leadership to ensure that all diamond drill personnel adhere to safety standards that exceed industry practice and any applicable legislative provisions
• Focus on building a team based environment and ensure that drill rig crews and maintenance staff have all the resources they require to safely and efficiently carry out their jobs and maximize productivity
• Lead in the continuous improvement of safe working and drilling conditions by updating and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) to industry best practice standards
• Ensure compliance of Diamond Drill SOP’s through regular Planned Task Observations (PTO)
• Achievement of agreed targets for the department in terms of:
o Adherence to 5 point safety system
o Minimum core loss
o Maximum drill efficiencies and productivity
o Maximum availability of machines
o Set-up of rigs within accuracy standards
o 100% completion of scheduled down hole surveys
o Tidy presentation of core
o Complete and accurate production and cost reporting
• Briefing and De-briefing of drilling crews at the commencement and completion of shifts, including a thorough hand over to the next shift’s supervisor
• Provide Senior Geology personnel with accurate daily reports with regard to drilling operations underground
• Ensure new drill sites are supported to standard, have proper drainage and sites are free of trip hazards
• Manage rig moves to new sites ensuring they are carried out safely and efficiently – and liaise with the relevant departments to ensure that all resources are arranged and provided for in advance to reduce down time
• Manage preventative maintenance of diamond drill machines and light vehicles to maximize availability
• Ensure efficient management and recycling of drilling and machine cooling water at drill sites
• Carry out routine housekeeping inspections ensuring that high housekeeping standards are maintained and regular clean ups of underground drilling sites and the surface workshop are carried out
• Maintain a thorough inventory of critical drilling consumables and machine parts at the surface workshop and immediately follow up shortages; ensure that min-max levels are constantly reviewed to maintain optimum inventory levels
• Liaise with stores personnel to review and maintain quantity and quality control on Diamond Drill main warehouse inventories
• Maintain a weekly cost report and plan expenditures according to budget
• Develop and maintain thorough and up to date personnel rosters to efficiently man the required number of drilling rigs to meet the required drilling production targets - and follow through recruitment as required
• Provide training, coaching and standards guidance to personnel to ensure they achieve full competency and productivity levels in specific job positions – ensure that training matrices are maintained and personnel are rostered well in advance for the required training
• Ensure personnel performance assessments are carried out as per site standards and key personnel are identified for further development as part of the section succession plan
• Assist Mining and Technical Services departments with the drilling and down hole survey of Mine Service and Geotechnical holes
• Audit surface drilling contractors and manage the practical and logistical aspects of surface drilling programs
PROFESSIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES
Education Requirements:
• Secondary school certificate, plus a trade or similar certificate
Experience Requirements:
• Minimum 15 years Diamond Drilling experience, underground and surface
• Minimum 5 years Diamond Drill Supervisory/ large drill program management experience
• Efficient drilling techniques – including a sound knowledge of semi-directional drilling techniques
• Able to work & maintain varied mechanical equipment, particularly diamond drilling equipment maintenance
• Able to maintain accurate records
• Able to update and improve Drilling Standard Operating Procedures
• Experience in managing drilling contractors
• Knowledge of parts and stores logistics
• Clear and concise communicator – both written & verbally
• Computer literate - Intermediate MS Word, Excel skills, Supply Software etc.
