POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Tanzania Coffee Research Institute (TACRI) Limited is Tanzania's autonomous coffee research institute. It was established in 2000 as a company limited by guarantee and without share capital, with a public mission. Its Head Office is at Lyamungu, Hai District, Kilimanjaro Region.
The Company serves all coffee growing zones through its sub-stations in Maruku (Bukoba), Mbimba (Mbozi), Mwayaya (Buhigwe), Sirari (Tarime) and Ugano (Mbinga).
TaCRI Limited is owned and managed by its stakeholders which include Coffee Growers, Traders, Processors, the Government and Development Partners. Its operations are funded through voluntary contributions from Coffee Growers, subventions from Government of Tanzania and contributions from Development Partners - particularly the European Union. TaCRI's mission is research for development to contribute to the transformation of the Tanzania coffee industry to sustainable prosperity by developing, packaging and disseminating appropriate technologies that will increase the competitiveness of the Tanzania coffee industry 'by increasing coffee productivity and quality, reducing costs of production and adding value through vertical diversification (roasting, packaging and local consumption) to improve income security and livelihoods of all players in the value chain.
The Company has enjoyed 15 years of meticulous research with outstanding results that are contributing to the transformation of the industry to sustainable prosperity. The new emphasis of TaCRI is stakeholder-led demand-driven Research for Development (R4D). In line with the current Government's drive to build an industrial economy, this is particularly an appropriate time for TaCRI as it gives it an opportunity to play a major role in further transformation of the coffee industry into a profitable and sustainable one benefiting all players in the entire value chain.
TaCRI Limited is seeking for a highly qualified candidate for the position of the Chief Executive Director (CEO). The primary function of CEO is to manage a viable coffee research company to guarantee confidence of stakeholders - including Coffee Growers, Traders, Processors, the Government and Development Partners. This is an extremely important and challenging post requiring both technical and managerial skills. The main challenge for the new CEO is to sustain gains made and move to the next level.
The' CED advances TaCRI's mission by initiating, developing, coordinating, and' conducting research designed to improve competitiveness and income security and livelihoods of all players in the coffee value chain.
To achieve this mission, the CED is required to be outward-looking, by liaising closely with stakeholders and influencing policy makers, as well as inward-looking - by ensuring that responsive, visionary and viable research and technology transfer programmes are undertaken and reported to the highest standard. All this has to be achieved within a framework of effective financial, resource management and the TaCRI Strategic Plan. Combining all these tasks will be essential.
The CED will be provided with a 'strong management team with delegated responsibilities for:
(j) External relations and advocacy;
(ii) Research management;
(iii) Technology transfer and training; and
(iv) Financial and resource management.
The CED could take personal responsibility for one or more of these activities, but he/she is ultimately responsible to the Board of Directors for all of them.
Reporting
The CED reports to the Board of Directors. The power to carry out operations and management of the Company are vested in the Board of Directors, through its CEO who is also Secretary to the Board.
Duty Station
Lyamungu - Hai, Moshi with regular visits to the sub-stations.
Eligibility for Applications
Candidates should be Tanzanian citizens.
Qualifications and experience
Candidates must: hold a PhD in any of the agricultural sciences; have a distinguished scientific and administrative experience; be IT literate; have distinguished record of publications in reputable scientific journals.
The following to be considered as added advantages: experience in managing multiple sources of R4D funds are preferred; knowledge on policy and technical aspects of the coffee industry.
Skills and Competences
Candidates must have:-
Distinguished academic records;
Evidence of excellent leadership;
Evidence of good interpersonal and communication skills; and
Commitment to teamwork, training and mentoring of junior
staff.
Terms and Conditions of Service
Remuneration is competitive and subject to review from time to time. Initial appointment is for a three-year contract renewable subject to satisfactory performance.
