Position Description:
The Foundation is recruiting a Programme Officer for the Child Abuse Programme and its work in East Africa, who will also have some administrative responsibility for Oak Foundation’s office in Dar-es-Salaam.
Countries of priority: Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda and multi-country initiatives
Programme responsibilities:
- Design and propose new proposals for grant-making to implement the CAP strategy;
- Contribute to the setting of programme budgets and provide input on the internal allocation of funds;
- Manage the responsibilities of a grant portfolio from the point of initial assessment to the drafting of recommendations to be considered by the Director and subsequently by President and Trustees;
- Monitor and evaluate grants on a regular basis, including through the conduct of site visits;
- Contribute to the strategic development of the programme, including support to the design of strategy in E. Africa, and contribute to the overall programme strategy. Represent Oak Foundation in the region, among peer groups and at public events.
Office Management Responsibilities:
- Be the local interface for administrative (bank, landlord, HR, IT, etc), tax and legal issues in Tanzania in coordination with the Administration Team in Geneva and third party local advisors;
- Ensure that local third party advisors, contractors and vendors are providing quality and cost effective services and solutions and recommend alternatives as required.
Position requirements:
• The successful candidate will have an advanced university degree, at least 7 years work experience in the child protection field, a well-grounded knowledge of violence prevention, policy issues, cross-sectoral working, and the twin foci of sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children. Understanding of how sectors such as health, education relate to child protection an advantage
• Working knowledge of the not-for-profit and policy sector with regards to children’s rights and violence to children in Tanzania and in the region. Foundation or grant-making experience will be an asset
• Understanding of non-profit and/or governmental financial reporting and budgeting.
• Proven research and analytical skills and some management experience
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
• The successful candidate should be willing to travel approx 30-40 days per year in Africa and beyond
• She/he should be a Tanzanian national or have a valid work permit
Skills required:
• Ability to work in a small 2-person office and through electronic communication with other team members
• Experience of convening and leading meetings
• Ability to negotiate with senior managers and leaders
• Administrative and financial experience
• Openness and willingness to learn and to share
• Fluency in written and spoken English
• Kiswahili mother tongue or fluency
• Excellent research, analytical and communication skills
• At ease using contemporary software (word processing, Excel, PowerPoint, email, internet based research)
• Tact, maturity, positive outlook and a sense of humour
